I had to write our own node access module (lots of fun!). It's mostly working, except that when someone views a node they shouldn't, the content area is blank and they are not given "access denied." Additionally, unpublished nodes don't get "access denied" either.

You might want to enable the devel node access module. It comes in really handy for tracking down these problems.
