Hi Francesco: This really clear more or less the use of taxonomy. Now I can play a little with my local installation of Drupal. But some doubts remain. For example: when I add a terms, what Synonyms means? I understand the rest of all but not this. Cheers -- ReynierPM 5to Ing. Informática Maestro de poco, aprendiz de mucho

Hi list: Because I'm newbie with Drupal I really can't understand how category system works. In CMS like *Nuke, Joomla and others I simply do this:
- Add category
- Add news to the category
But here in Drupal I see some new terms for me like Taxonomy and some others. Where I can found a tutorial or better a explanation for how this part of Drupal works?
In drupal taxonomy http://drupal.org/node/299 works in different way: Vocabulary is the "container" such as a macro-category that contain terms, terms are real categories, you can assign to every nodes type many vocabulary.
eg: using a news website you can assign to story content type different categories, places, topic,
Places (Vocabulary) - Rome (term) - Amsterdam (term) - Paris (term) - Berlin (term) - ... (term)
Topic (Vocabulary) - Politics (term) - Finance (term) - Lifestyle (term) - ...
I hope being enough clear :)

I was installing modules and just before I installed Category I noticed "categories" under the Administer menu BUT I don't see a categories module that needs to be enabled under admin > modules.
Can someone explain what I am encountering?

You are experiencing the "friendly" name of taxonomy.module.

Ah, thank you. -

If I install the Category module am I giving up the ability to support the use of any other modules that rely on taxonomy (or even books)? The module that comes to my mind at this time is location because I'd like my users to supply their zip code on account creation to which I will use the location module (and the other associated modules) to create geo-buddygroups.

Hi Cozzi,
The category module comes with compatibility 'wrappers' for the taxonomy and book modules, which allows taxonomy- or book-dependent modules to generally work OK with it enabled. However, the wrappers don't always guarantee that a module will work with category, and as far as I'm aware, the location module hasn't been tested with the wrappers.
Cheers, Jaza.

See the documentation:

I use Category quite a bit and I've run into very few problems with taxonomy-dependent modules. In fact, my compatibility problems have generally stemmed from my custom code not using the taxonomy modules in a very safe way, which then doesn't work when I moved to Categories. However, that was pretty easy to fix.
