File system out of root

I know that the file system is very hard to move from the root of drupal once your site is mature, but I have tried it anyway (not on my live site, but on a clone of it). I have tried to read also as much as I could about this both in the drupal.org search and doing a general google search. So I'm telling the list what I did and what didn't work, just in case anybody can give me any hints to understand a little bit better how things work with the file system. My site is Drupal 5.7. I have full access to the server, database, you name it (it must be almost impossible to do this without full access). Server is linux with standard tools. My previous setup was file system set to "private" but located in the root of drupal, in a "files" directory. So I created a directory out of the webserver root and put my "files" directory there, with write permissions and owned by apache owner and group. Then I changed the path in admin/settings/file-system to the new path, and erased my old "files" directory at the root. I use fckeditor to upload files and images to nodes, so these get an initial path of "/files/file" and "/files/image". Now these paths have to be moved to "/system/files/file" and "/system/files/image" once the files are out of the root. I changed this searching for all tables which contained these strings with the "search" feature of phpmyadmin, and then substituting the strings with the mysql command line (UPDATE table SET column = REPLACE(filepath,"/files/file", "/system/files/file");) I tried this of course on a sandbox install and database, and will get all the backups if I try to mess around with my actual database. There are not so many tables that contain references to files, so this can be done in about half an hour. In any case, after adjusting a couple more things related to fckeditor seeing the new file system, everything seemed to work until I logged out. The anonymous user was unable to access the files in the new file system. Also strangely some roles could access them but some others could not, and in particular I have two roles which look very similar in terms of permissions but one can access it and the other not. I also tried giving the remaining permissions to the role whith no access, but no result, no matter what I tried. So now I have a lot of questions: 1) is the "private" file system outside of the root always inaccessible for anonymous users? 2) Which is the permission that gives access to this type of private file system? 3) What is the effect of having "private" chosen, but the file system in the root? This seems to give access to everybody to the files and images that are referred in nodes, despite the fact of setting it as "private". 4) And how come I have such a disparate behavior of different roles, what determines which ones can access the outside private file system? Custom Advanced Search

I am trying to create a custom search, i.e. one which will only search in certain CCK fields. I believe that hook_search for Drupal 5 is what I need: http://api.drupal.org/api/function/hook_search/5 but when I set this up in my custom module and run a search $op comes through as 'name' but not as 'search'. Yet I am seeing the search results page. Is this expected behavior? If so, can someone explain to me what I am missing because I was expecting $op to be 'search' so I could add my keyword pairs to the search SQL to limit it. Or perhaps this is indeed not the correct approach? Thanks, Fred

Adding Wrapper Div In Zen Theme

I'm trying to take a static theme and convert it to Drupal, and I'm having a problem with a background image. You can see what I'm trying to convert from at www.campusfiresafety.org. The problem is the graphic that is the brown border under the navigation bar at the top (under the banner). It is a 174px x 1px image that starts at the top of the page and goes down to just below the buttons. In looking at the Zen theme, what I would like to do is mimic, that, but the header div goes down and stops above the navbar div. My thought was to create a wrapper div that would encompass the header and navbar divs. The problem is that the navbar div is not directly adjacent to the header div: instead, it is after <div id="content">, and inside <div id="main-inner">, which is inside <div id="main">, which is adjacent to <div id="header">. Since the main div includes the page content, I can't wrap header and navbar as I would like. Can anybody give me an option of how to get the background image to go down through the navbar div? I supposed I could try moving the navbar div out of main, but I'm not the CSS guru, so I'd be afraid of messing the whole page up. The other option would be to cut down the div so it fits in the navbar div, I suppose. You can see my attempt at http://dev.campusfiresafety.org. On the same page, I also need to replace the text for each primary links with a button image and mouseover image. I've seen a few options for ways to do that. Does anybody have experience doing this, and suggestions of what way would be the easiest? Thanks. Steve

Submitting the Search Form in IE

Has anyone else noticed that when using the search form that appears in the content of the search results page, meaning the one under the text "Enter your keywords:" on this page: http://drupal.org/search/node/Fred that pressing the Enter key does NOT submit the form in IE? The Enter key indeed submits the form above in the right hand corner and in FF, the Enter key submits either form. But in IE, the one in the content isn't submitted. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Collaborative writing in Groups?

Hi, I'm looking toward a solution to allow users of specifics groups to edit posts made by other members of the same group. Use case: I have a Group "Foo". Users "john" & "Alice" belong to "Foo", but user "Bob" don't John add a new page to Foo (not public) Bob don't see the new page, but Alice do : great :) But : How could Alice edit John posts (not using comments, just use the "edit" tab) ? Is it possible using OG & contributed modules ? I tried some configurations with OG, Content type, & workflow module, it almost works except that Bob still have access to /node/myprivatecollaborativepost/edit (but not to /node/myprivatecollaborativepost ) Thanks for any help Pierre-Yves

I posted this on the drupal.org forum yesterday and have had an underwhelming response. :-) Is it possible to construct a sql statement that does what I'm looking for? http://drupal.org/node/235292 (to save you clicking, reprinted below) ________________________________________________ I am interested in being able to attach what I'm calling a Hierarchical Geographical Code (HGC) either to nodes or to taxonomy terms and to use it to present more locally relevant content to site users. Here's how the code is constructed: First 2 numbers for region/continent (01 for N.America, 02 for Europe, 03 for Asia, etc) Next 2 numbers - country (01 for USA, 02 for Canada, etc) Next 3 numbers - state/province (001 for Alabama, 002 for Alaska, etc) We need three digits as some countries (UK is one example) has more than 99 state-level entities. Next 3 numbers - city/town within a province/state (001 for Allentown, 002 for Astonbury, etc) The HGC is always 10 digits long. The US (whole) is therefore 0101000000 and so on. so Dallas, Texas might have a HGC of 01|01|047|048 (would be entered as 0101047048) Here's how I would like it to work: I want blocks to show users content that is relevant to them. And moreover, relevant to the location they've selected in the nodeprofile "Location" field. If a user from Dallas logs in, I want to show a block showing links/pages from Dallas or (and here's the trick), if there aren't pages from Dallas, then from Texas, then from the USA, then from North America. Basically, the block would be constructed with sql which looks first to the right side of the HGC, then works its way along leftwards until it finds a match. So the two components needed are: 1. the CCK field in my nodeprofile. The HGC is automatically added into the user's nodeprofile entry using computed field. The main locations db table has five columns: region - country - state - town - hgc This means every member who fills out their nodeprofile has a HGC automatically assigned to them. This is already in place on my site. 2. The HGC tagged onto content. Initially, my wish is to automatically tag a certain customised content type myself, but I imagine we could work out something to tag other common content types such as blog, forum, video content types. I could use a taxonomy drop-down on every node and automatically attach the HGC at the same time in the background. Now, my big question is about the blog sql itself. Could someone tell me if it's possible to produce a block that "scans" for locally relevant content in the way I've outlined above. So, to paraphrase (I no speak sql!), it would be: SHOW 'city' content type WHERE location EQUALS 0101047048 OR 0101047000 OR 0101000000 OR 0100000000 I hope someone understand the type of thing I'm looking for. There was some discussion about how to limit geographically based tags to cities, etc. You might want to check out the geonames.org service, and consider exporting a hierarchical list of geographic names and making vocabularies out of them (eg states, cities). This would be a good way to ensure correct spellings, etc, and reduce the problems associated with free tagging. The downside is that it may need some performance tuning. I've a list of checkboxes and a fieldtext: default should show like: [X] abc [ ] def [ ] ghi ... [X] other Other [fieldtext] It should be turned into: [X] abc [ ] def [ ] ghi ... [X] other [fieldtext] I do know that the checkbox and the textfield are redundant... but well that's what I've to obtain. Generated HTML looks like: <div class="form-item"> <label>Label </label> <div class="form-checkboxes"> ... <div class="form-item"> <label class="option"><input type="checkbox" ... class="form-checkbox" /> Altro</label> </div> </div> </div> <div class="form-item"> <label for="blabla">Other: </label> <input type="text" maxlength="128" name="other" id="other" size="60" value="" class="form-text" /> </div> Using css only I find pretty hard to make the textfield fall down and align with the last item on the checkbox list since it is outside of the div of the last item. (float: right/left don't do the job). It'd be nice to inject the textfield in the same div field of the last checkbox... but this require to write a not obvious hard to maintain theme_ function. Hi all, I have a directory /shop that use a 3rd part software. I need to create a gateway for do some actions and one of the problem is for the function theme(): all the link in the html output are locale to the /shop directory (so: /shop/css/, /shop/user/) and not to the / directory (/css, /user....). I have quite a specific content-type requirement for my site and have been pulling my hair out thinking about how I could achieve it with drupal - so I turn to this support list, if not for a solution, then for at least a pointer or two to push me nearer an answer. I have a site where I want members to be able to enter information about hundreds or even thousands of cities. It's not relevant exactly what type of information they are writing. For example, a member creates a new X content type (this is the big question) and puts the title Dallas, Texas and writes a paragraph or two about it. Other members can rate that entry or attach comments to it...or, very importantly, add their own entry, which would have equal weight to the first entry. Ultimately, tags could be attached to each entry to allow some type of sorting.
