Hi everybody, I'm currently managing some Drupal sites on a Rackspace cloud and I'm pretty happy with their service. But as my sites are getting bigger and more complex, they use quite some RAM. I still haven't been able to cut down the number of modules but I have implemented different levels of caching to reduce the load.
However, a 4GB instance on Rackspace cloud cost around 160USD/month, at this price, I think it may be time to investigate for a dedicated server. In Europe OVH offer powerfull dedicated server around 80USD/month (http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/dedicated_offers.xml ), but I'd like to find a similar offer in the USA. Which dedicated server provider do you use for what cost and what service ? What would be your recomendation ? And bonus question, is there an easy way to migrate my system configuration to a new host.
Thanks a lot.
Nicolas
I recommend most of my clients to Voxel. They cost a little more, but their servers and support is top notch, plus you get use of the VoxCAST CDN included in their hosting:
(On top of that - Voxel is very much knowledgeable and active in Drupal. Even their site is powered by it)

Hi, I have a 4GB box at inmotionhosting.com for $229/month.
It sounds like you might be more of a geek than me and so this might not make sense for you. With inmotionhosting.com they will really hold your hand with everything non-Drupal related. And if you choose to *not* have the root password, they take responsibility as well.
As I've learned more, I decided that I did want to have root access because I didn't want to wait around and with knowledge one wants more power! When I got root they warned me that they wouldn't take any responsibility anymore. But they have been just as helpful. I think the warning was that they wanted to cover their butts, and I don't blame them. But I have NEVER gotten from them, "You must have screwed something up because you have root access, sorry, no help."
No host is perfect, but I've been very happy with my dedicated server at inmotionhosting.com.

Thanks for the tip, I'm not a sysadmin but I have to in order to keep costs reasonnable (and get some new knowledge too). $229 for a managed server is quite reasonnable, but I'm very surprised to be unable to find decent dedicated server for reasonnable price in the USA. OVH offers a Core i5 with 8GB, 2*1TB Raid 1 drives for $80, for the same price I've got only 2GB instance in Rackspace Cloud. Where is the OVH american counter part ? :/

I use corenetworks.com for my dedicated server. Good prices, but they are UNMANAGED. You do it all, which is not a problem for me, but may be if you aren't used to running a server. They do not offer any backup services either, that's up to you as well.
I believe they are located in Michigan somewhere.

We've been using Linode - they've been great. They also have some great scripts that you can use to provision your hardware.

Linode was also one of my original choice, but the price is the same, I'm not very comfortable paying $160/mo for a 4GB VPS when OVH give me much more power for half the price. I may be too stubborn and focalized on this provider :D

Agreed. I can't recommend linode.com highly enough.
Their support is amazing, and I doubt you'll find a negative review from anyone in the OSS community.
You don't get cpanel with fantastico, et al (but you can install them yourself) - and a 4Gb RAM / 128Gb HDD server, + 1.6Tb trf is only $160 p/m. You can add automated backup facilities to that for an extra fee, or just make snapshot backups in a separate partition.
You can't compare dedicated servers to VPS, though you do get stock 4 processor Xen instances on linode.com, along with shared, mirrored, drives. I had a look at OVH, and they do look really impressive - but at the price I have to seriously wonder how they manage those specs.
Great conversation. Thanks for all of the information.
I'd be interested in your thoughts about Acquia's new DevCloud offering. It seems comparable to what is being discussed (at $150/month), allows multiple sites, and has what looks like great controls for developers, new and experienced.

I'm thinking about trying acquia cloud dev but I'm quite confused about their prices, also I'm not sure if I can host website there that are in production and not just in development. I'm sure that they created great tools regarding dev, staging and production sites but I think I would be too limited if I'm not able to store some other websites (I also have some Joomla and WP to host too). But it's true I'd really like to delegate optimization and server configuration because I spend quite some time setting up everything (APC, memcache...) ----- Original Message ----- From: Marilyn Langfeld To: support@drupal.org Sent: Thursday, April 28, 2011 9:29 AM Subject: Re: [support] Any dedicated server hosting to recommend ?

Touché :D Well I just saw that 1&1 offer dedicated servers for around $99/mo for 4GB instance, dual core ( http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/ServerPremium ). Not insannely great but quite affordable, the problem is that I haven't heard a lot of praises of their mutualised service so I'm not sure if their dedicated service is better or not but I'm not very convinced yet... ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeff To: support@drupal.org Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 11:55 PM Subject: Re: [support] Any dedicated server hosting to recommend ?

I'm using networkredux.com which is listed on the page. I find they have excellent support. They donated a VPS Cloud for use by www.mingw.org.
I use Bluehost, only lets me use 128 memory for PHP (limits)
