<snip> FYI, I tried Drupal 7 (also as a new user) and found it not ready for newbies to use. Many of the themes and modules have not been updated yet, </snip>
I'm saddened by this also. I want to start building a Drupal 7 site but even basic well known and desperately needed modules and themes have the famous "I pledge that this or that will be ready when Drupal 7 is released". Surely, now that the code is locked (Drupalcon June 2010) we can have some of the more well known modules. My basic Drupal 7 was killed by a D7 beta update last week after getting views almost working, had to reinstall the pre update release. I'd love to be working with D7. Roger

Personally, I tried a D6 to D7 upgrade with a copy of my personal blog, and it worked great. The only thing I regret is that D7 seems to be slower, but aside of that, it worked nicely!
Except the views module, but I think I'm going to abandon this module for a lot of sites that don't really need it, at least I don't have to wait for it to be stable :) Doing a custom block or a custom page is sometime really faster than doing the views equivalent.
A lot of modules are still missing but it's normal, the freeze just happened, a lot of them will be ported quickly I think (basic module porting to D7 is relatively simple).
There are a lot of features in core that make it almost self-sufficient for a lot of basic sites even without any contrib modules.
Pierre.
Did you by chance submit an issue for what broke your upgrade? I run a couple of sites that have been running D7 since before the beta release and haven't had any series issues doing upgrades. Of course with the versatility of Drupal comes scenarios that may have not been though of when upgrading, which is why feedback via the issue queue is of vital importance.
There are far more modules ready for D7 than there were for D6 when it was released. If Drupal releases were put off until numerous modules and themes were upgraded, then we would still be waiting for the final release of D6.

Well the cool thing is you could just go with Drupal 6, and the support will be there until Drupal 8 is released.
@Roger I strongly echo Jamie's remarks. Be patient. :) It was several months after the release of Drupal 6 before it was practical to upgrade from Drupal 5 due to lagging contrib. If you are not able to donate development time, or participate in the issue queues, consider donating money to incentivize developers.

I personally wouldn't think of doing a production site in D7 until at least the 7.1 release, probably 7.2. There's a huge amount of pretty serious bugs in the thing, many that would have been "critical" under the old system.
5 pages of "major" bugs:

I think Drupal 6 is great, but I also think it's rather lacking in the usability department. For the past few months, I've been evaluating Drupal 7, and I am extremely impressed by the new interface, which is an immense improvement both visually and in usability. I also think it's a great move to bring CCK into core. Other than that, many of the more interesting improvements are taking place underneath the hood, such as moving over to PDO for the database.
In the short term, I think we'll see Drupal 7 fall way behind D6 in available modules, but over time, I'm guessing that the usability improvements will bring in more users (perhaps even peel off some WordPress folks) and the API improvements will bring in more developers.
If you were about to start a new major web project, I think it would be worthwhile to evaluate Drupal 7, but I wouldn't blame you for picking Drupal 6 just for the contributed modules.

But compelling is a pretty subjective thing of course.
IMHO: I would generally not encourage new users to be beta users of any product, so don't feel bad about adopting drupal 6 as a newbie right now.

Thanks for the comments, folks. They verify my intuition and impressions. Here's hoping for a great new release for version 7.
By the way, I installed the Administer module (for Drupal 6) and it makes access to administration functions a lot quicker. Regards, Bill
