Hello all.
I am learning and studying Drupal. Actually on version 7 since my hosting company (with CPanel) only provide version 7 as option for instaltion with Fantastico. I have been playing with version 7, it works, have had some issues that are very simple and do not work (like having a menu link under a parent one, it just lost the child menu and does not appear in any place. Anyway I am not sure if it is a Drupal BUg or I am doing something wrong. Since I can install rapidly I am starting from zero again to se if maybe I damaged something in some way.
For starters. Do you think it is better to downgrade to 6 (I can install it manually). Or continue with 7?
I have read that 7 is better and easier to learn for newbies.
What would be your advice?
Thanks in advance

Hi Jorge,
There is some sort of an "issue" with the active menu trail in D7. I use the very popular menu block module for sidebar menus and such. I am presently using the Superfish module for dropdowns. *

Hello Ryan
Thanks a lot for the comment. That's something I am looking to learn also. To have D7 working properly, what modules are recommended to use. NOt for menus only but also for other activities.
Thanks for your help and time.

I haven't had any major issues with any d7 modules personally. (even the alpha versions)
For simple data driven, user maintained d7 sites I typically use menu block, superfish(if dropdowns are necessary), views, chaos tools, webform, pathauto, token, wysiwyg (with TinyMCE), IMCE, IMCE wysiwyg API bridge. I typically also enable core modules path, contact, search and image. *

You're lucky, then, Ryan. I ran into a serious issue on the front page of a new site I was making. As far as I am concerned, the "Read more always showing" issue is pretty close to a show stopper. I am pressing ahead hoping that it will be fixed before I roll out the site. Since this is a pro-bono site, I have some flexibility and am using it to get my hands dirty with a grid theme (Omega) that I will need for a later site.
I agree that Superfish and menu block are an awesome combination that I just discovered a few weeks ago. I tend to prefer CKEditor over TinyMCE, for Word clean up, but really wish customers wouldn't ask for them. Nancy

I've just upgraded a Drupal 6 site from FCK Editor to CK Editor, and now all <p> and <br /> tags are being stripped. I can see that they're still there in the raw body field in node_revisions. i've: modified the filtered html list to add them in, changed the body field to full html, flushed cache several times, re-ordered filters, and turned the line break conversion on and off. Nothing seems to make a difference.
I must be missing something, but I'm not sure what.
Thanks. -Don-
Do you mean that paragraphs and linebreaks are being stripped when you *view* the node, or when you *edit* the node?

Jorge, I will answer your question the way I always do: To "have D7 working properly," install what you need and no more. While there are lists of what others think are necessary, the answer for you is really individual. Of all the modules - and suggested lists - the only contributed module that I have used universally is Pathauto (well, before D7, that meant Tokens too). Yes, I even have a simple site that doesn't even use Views or CCK.
As for Fantastico, I strongly recommend against using it. You said you know how to install manually, so do. You will not be able to upgrade Drupal with Fantastico - I know from painful experience. Nancy Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. -- Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.

Jorge, I agree with Nancy to only enable what modules you need. But for most standard "data driven", "user maintained" sites (which for me is 99%) I use those listed above. *

ANother question .... what are themes that work fine with D7?
I read all (if I am not wrong only 134 for D7 using the filter for version)
I downloaded some of them and the only one that workked fine is Marinelli 7.x-3.0-beta9. I was looking not too plain and not too simple and of course not too fancy .. I tried several but some send errors, at least on my configuration.
Take care all. Thanks in advance

Depends. *lol*
I have read that 7 is better and easier to learn for newbies.
From what I've seen, it's sweet. The one thing I like most about 7 is that user profiles are more tightly integrated and can be taxonomy tagged. (Haven't really got a working prototype yet, but for me that's a clincher.)
What would be your advice?
Well I cheat a little and try to find nice themes that do everything for me. Not that I can't CSS, but life is too short to push pixels around, and I'm too old. ;)
Check out Danland. It's a great theme.
There are many more out there, but you have to play with them to find the one that suits. (I really like that drupal.org lists the themes by downloads. So you get an instantaneous idea of popularity and traction.)
As far as recommended modules go, it's so hard to say, since it varies from site to site. But modules I can recommend are (in no particular order, and some I purely list as dependencies - or best guesses - as I can't claim any working knowledge whatsoever :):
CKEditor WYSIWYG Views CTools Pathauto Token Insert (or Imagepicker) Colorbox OG ACL Petition VotingAPI Flag Date Search 404 Logintoboggan Nodetype Mollom Blockanonymouslinks Notifications (OR subscriptions! I haven't worked my head around these 2 satisfactorily yet.) Google Analytics Google Adsense
Facebook / Reddit / Digg (um.. whatever), etc integration modules (Recommend/Like) are not on my priority list right now - but they may also be a good exercise for you...
Important: If you do go back to Drupal 6, be sure to standardize on filefield and imagefield, as they are included in Core 7, and will make your upgrade path approachable.
I hope you don't mind, but I've hijacked this thread slightly in the hope that others will recommend their favorite modules, too?

Hello Jeff.
Thank you very much for your time on this thread. I really appreciate all your comments .
IN another list I asked why users stay with Drupal and the answers confirm what I have decided, that what makes Drupal be th ebest option is the support of the community, it is something that had made some other Open Source projects to be the winners.
Too old? We are all young in our minds always. Maybe our bodies are changing and are getting old but I am sure we always will be young poeple, with lot of energy indie of us.
I will try during the weekend all the comments and advise all of you have told me. I would like to start the week maybe with a new installation, more solid and that maybe could be the foundation for what I would like to accomplish.
Thank you all for your help.
Have a nice weekend.

Actually, the User Tags module allows this in D6 and works quite well.

A little CSS can transform a theme that you've seen before into something you haven't. I used to like Pixture Reloaded alot until we had a major problem on my last gig. Maybe it's not a problem, in D7. It does have Superfish built in and rounded corners.
So you get an instantaneous idea of popularity and traction.)
For themes, this could be bad as well if you're looking for something unique. That's a good reason to learn some CSS.
Facebook / Reddit / Digg (um.. whatever), etc integration modules (Recommend/Like) are not on my priority list
Service Links works great for sharing.
