Folks: I am updating my site to Drupal 7. I am using the Omega theme, with a simple sub theme I developed. I'm stuck because the Zone and Region configuration menus no longer open up to set the configurations of each region. It did work, but after a LOT of struggle trying to get the update.php script to run without errors, the Zone and region configuration settings stopped working. In addition, the Omega them Layout Configuration had a nice selectable menu on the left, and this disappeared and the entire settings list appeared on a single page.
Any advice? I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't need to do the upgrade, but if there is some obvious thing I'm doing wrong, I'll keep trying. I've followed the Omega theme directions by having the required modules available.

update.php is essential after any code updates that add/remove tables. not running it, or getting stuck mid-way, is serious and you should roll back.
make sure before you do upgrades that you have backups of your file system and database. Using GIT for the files is strongly recommended as it makes it very easy to roll back/fwd.
your update could fail for a number of reasons, missing files, partial downloads, moving from a version of a module to another where there are migration issues etc.
it's hard to diagnose your issue without more information, and it's not the easiest type of problem to diagnose via an email neither.
check the log files, what errors did you get? is it in one module?
bottom line though: roll back your code if it is all broken now, go back to your previous saved version of the database. then start over and if you hit an error, deal with it before proceeding and resolve it without skipping anything.
hope something here is helpful!
best,
seb.
Make sure that every module and every theme is up-to-date with their D6 version before updating. Then update to D7. If a module/theme isn't going to be used in D7 be sure to get rid of it in D6 first.

My worst nightmare was the steady disintegration of the ui for the omega theme. Something may have gotten corrupted in my MAMP installation, so I'll start from a new MAMP and see if it helps. I'm doing everything on a local server so I don't mess up my live one that I need to have functioning. Another thing that seemed to help was setting the php memory higher.
This has been an incredible time sink, and I'm thinking about whether the upgrade is really worth it.
Thanks for the suggestions, and I know it's hard to help from email. There are so many things that can go wrong.

On the upgrading being worth it question . . . I have migrated 5 client sites from 6 to 7 and am happy to have done so. Still trying to get the rest to make the move upward because of the UI improvements, the api improvements, but mostly because of the clients that have moved are much happier with 7 than they were with 6.
As has been said in previous emails, upgrade the 6 installation to the latest 6 versions of Drupal core and all installed modules. Then go to Drupal 7.
I have had upgrades happen at different times in the development of D7, but taking each site as far forward in D6 as I could, then going to latest D7 in the upgrade has given me no problems. Different themes and modules in each site made no difference.
go to latest D6 core and modules update.php go to latest D7 core and modules update.php
Not saying you will have no issues following this method, but I have had no issues following this method.

Does it work with a standard unaltered theme?
What I have done in the past in situations like this the following:
1. Download the lastest version of the base theme (omega in your case) into a good new drupal dev site.
2. Create a new subtheme of the base theme, and give it a different name than the one on your d6 site. Copy over the customization's (theme css etc) to the new theme.
3. When you have a good working copy of the new 7.x version of your customizations on a dev site, push this new theme to your D6 converted drupal site. Be sure and clear all caches (including theme registry) between changes.
4. Change the upgraded D6 site to use the new customized theme.
This way you aren't dealing with conflicts in the way settings/regions are stored.
Good luck.
