advice on how to tag articles as exclusive to certain roles for a specific timeframe?

I hope this post is appropriate in this list. If not please accept my apology. As Drupal newbie I was hoping to get some advise on how to accomplish what I feel is something very simple, yet being unfamiliar with Drupal seems very difficult for me. I'd like to be able to add several form fields to an article (node) that would allow an administrator/author to specify if it is exclusive to a specific role. If so I'd like a pulldown menu that allows me to select which role it should be exclusive to. Then I'd like start date and end date fields to specify when this article should remain exclusive (the idea being that once it's past the end date it will no longer be exclusive and therefore be available to everyone). So far I've tried using CCK along with the Date module and JsTools (jscalendar). First off I cannot get jscalendar to work at all. no calendar is visible when you click on the text field, even though it is specified. Secondly, there doesn't seem to be any way of requring that if the exclusive checkbox is checked that the Role pulldown and startdate and enddate fields are completed. I appear to only be able to say that the start date and end date are required, even though they should not be if the exclusive checkbox is not checked. Third, I'm not sure how using CCK I would add a pulldown menu that dynamically gets filled with all roles. Is this possible? Last, how does one go about adding special validation to a node so that if specific fields are checked that other fields are required, if they're not checked then the other fields are not required, etc.? Is this beyond the scope of CCK? If so, how would you recommend accomplishing this? Any advice, insight, reference links would be GREATLY appreciated. best regards, brian

does having a different front page require front page module?

Possible to display taxonomy alphabetically?

Hello, I'm running a site using Drupal 5.1, and have a question regarding taxonomy pages. I've got a category for a booklist: http://beta.menashalibrary.org/childrens/books/preschoolers/bugs It shows the term 'bugs' in order of the newest to oldest. Is there a way to view these alphabetically by title? - jody

implementing a 3dr party search script

We have managed to successfully integrate mediawiki and drupal and are now faced with the whole issue of unified search. Firstly, I suppose I should ask if it's possible to get Drupal's core search module to search other MySQL tables in other databases, which would allow us to point it towards our mediawiki installation. Failing that, how would one go about working with a third party script? I've already used Fluid Dynamics' perl-based script on another (non-Drupal) site but I imagine I would need a better PHP based script for this task. Has anyone done anything similar before? Neil

permissions problems

Strange permissions behavior: I'm using Drupal 5.1 and the blog module and events module. Recently, content started disappearing for any user but the administrator. Funny thing was, it wasn't all at once, but gradual - for instance, for awhile only some events would show up. Then none at all. I turned off each of the access permissions one by one to identify which permission was toggling between seeing no content and seeing the content. What I found is that if I have "Access Content" and "Administer nodes" checked in the nodes section, the user can view the content. However, if I have just "Access Content" checked, the user cannot view the content. I want anonymous users, etc to view content, but not to administer it! Any ideas what is going on and how I can repair this? Thanks! Jeff

Colapsable main menu revisited

Hi to the list, I'm sorry for taking up this problem again but i have tried to the best of my knowledge and have yet to come up with a solution. What i want: I would like to have a couple of colapsable menus one called "the person" where things like "about me" and the intro page and things more related to me goes, and one entitled "the business" where my business opportunities are listed. To avoid clutter on the front page, however, i want to have only the top menu links visible and when clicking on those links, the other menus will pop out, rather like the "administer" menu is built up, but i would like to avoid page refreshes if this is possible. How do i do this? I can make menu items with sub menu items colapsable, but not the main menu, it seems. Btw, i'm using Drupal 5.1. I think i need a sorta step-by-step guide to doing this, and as i'm a non-programmer, i'd be thankful for tips on modules and/or other gizmos that would do the trick. And one more thing, do menus *have* to point to nodes? /Krister

immediate installation errors

Greetings, I'm trying to install Drupal 5.1 and I am getting the following errors immediately upon attempting the installation through the browser: Notice: Undefined variable: no_module_preprocess in /usr/local/drupal-5.1/includes/common.inc on line 1467 Notice: Undefined variable: no_theme_preprocess in /usr/local/drupal-5.1/includes/common.inc on line 1488 and Drupal database setup The following error must be resolved before you can continue the installation process: The Drupal installer requires write permissions to ./sites/default/settings.php during the installation process. For the write permissions error, I set the permissions to 777 for everything inside the drupal-5.1 directory and all files are owned by apache.apache. I have no clue how to move forward. Have I planned this all wrong?

My main section "ABOUT" contains: -My BIO -My Discography -- As a Leader -- As a Supporting Musician -My show schedule -Video Clips -Audio Clips -The list of musicians who plays for my shows (present/past) I did this by creating custom content types to each of them. After many days of trial and error, they all shows up as desired using Views. However, as I moved onto other section, such as my jazz theory section, where I used Book, I realized if I should had done all the "ABOUT" section in Book. The main reasons are: - Book provides "previous" and "next" node hyperlink at the bottom - Book provides summarized front page For example, I couldn't figure out how to create a View just to list the titles of all the subsections, like Book provides. If I want to convert all the "ABOUT" subsections to a Book, can it be done? I couldn't find it how. Book question

Book function is cool, but I can't find the way to place icon/image besides the title link of each subsections. Any help would be appreciated. P.S., I think my main issue is I am far from being used to how to phrase when I search at Drupal site and/or Google. I get so many hits on irrelevant discussion threads. Themeing, and leading someone down the wrong path

I would like someone with more knowledge of themeing to review the posts at http://drupal.org/node/147374 I (coreb) gave some suggestions on how to modify a "Who's Online" snippet to do what they wanted. I know that there's a better way to do it by overriding theme_user or using some sort of hook_*_alter, but I don't understand how. Theme overrides have been something I haven't been able to grok.
