I have found that some, not all, of the files I upload, (eg: photo's, and files attached to blog entries) seem to simply vanish from the system. I can double check after posting that they are indeed present, and a few hours later they are gone.
Watchdog reports no errors, the files simply vanish from the database.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Anna,
I think we need more info on this...
Does this happens to all uploaded files? Does the file type (extension) is included in the allowed upload files? What drupal version are you using? Are you using the default upload module? What is the setting on the temporary directory?

No it does not happen to ALL files, it seems random.
File types are allowed (last file that fell out was a rtf document
Drupal 4.6.3

Can you please check your systems error logs? have a look at apaches error logs, Most of the times, the problem is somewhere in Apache or PHPs file handling. Ber

I am on a shared server and do not have access to server logs. This has never happened before under Nuke, Mambo, AeDating, or any number of other CMS.
By way of example... our of 14 uploaded jpg images, all uploaded at the same time, 24 hours later 2 of the images vanished from Drupal. They were still present in exactly the same location on my server, Drupal was still calling them through the correct URL, but they would not display in Drupal.
One thing I am fast learning about Drupal is that support and willingness to examine the system structure is non existent.

That would be because your problem description strongly suggests a fault with the hosting environment. You state:
They were still >present in exactly the same location on my server, Drupal was still calling >them through the correct URL, but they would not display in Drupal.
So... the images are in the correct place on the server and Drupal is producing the correct URL to the image.
What more do you want Drupal to do?
...R.
What more do you want Drupal to do?
...R.
Just to make sure... The image is in the filesystem, the path is correct, but drupal does not show it? if you just do http://www.example.com/path/file.jpg will it show the image?
If so, it looks like a url problem... Drupal may be writing the wrong path.
Do you understand html? is the img or a tag correct? do you have a real example so we can go there and see?

A VERY simple question.....
Is there anyone here who has ever had a problem with Drupal successfully solved through this list?
It seems to me that every time anyone poses a problem here they are given a huge run around looking at everything EXCEPT the Drupal system itself.
Is it simply that the Drupal developers have begun to think they are perfect and infallible and their system cannot possibly have any bugs, despite the fact that oh so many of the modules have warnings regarding potential bugs, and patched up solutions?
Is there anyone here who has ever had a problem with Drupal successfully solved through this list?
Yes, I have had problems solved both in this mailing list and on #drupal-support.
It seems to me that every time anyone poses a problem here they are given a huge run around looking at everything EXCEPT the Drupal system itself.
Unfortunately, usually there is a puzzle. In most cases you need to have a more coprehensive view on a problem in order to help people. Most people are unwilling to answer with "oh, this is due to X", if there is a strong possibility for Y,Z,A,B, .... That is simply wrong. If you manage to get more comprehensive description of your problem, you'll get better mileage.
Is it simply that the Drupal developers have begun to think they are perfect and infallible and their system cannot possibly have any bugs, despite the fact that oh so many of the modules have warnings regarding potential bugs, and patched up solutions?
Hmm, sense frustration here. No Drupal is not perfect, and will never be. It develops fast, which means it has permanent growth aches.
Every single drupal support answer is a gesture of good will from the person answering, regardless of their motives. Please, respect the people who volunteer their time and skills.
Cheers, Vlado
dear listers, hello. I am one of the people out there who asked questions that were mostly answered and few times not. I always appreciate those who try to answer, and understand that a support list for an open source system is just a group of vollanteers who are not obliged to help if they don't feel like it. honestly, at a point I felt that support in this community isn't that big, but I just find drupal to be the right system for me, and that's why i stick to it. just the other day a person named kubas helped me restore my site which was mostly going to be lost and imagine the panic when every single data in the database was at risk? sometimes one needs to ask his / her question more than once if it gets ignored, because chances are not everybody read the post. just my thoughts. regards, mohammed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anna" anna@menu-browser.com To: support@drupal.org Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2005 1:02 PM Subject: [support] Support?????

yes. numerous times [just by reading most of the time]. and guess what? i've never felt the need to insult anyone either.

Yep. Many, many times. I was however, exceedingly polite, realizing that nobody on the mailing list was obligated to help me in any way whatsoever and only helped out of the goodness of their hearts.

It seems to me that every time anyone poses a problem here they are given a huge run around looking at everything EXCEPT the Drupal system itself.
From what I can tell:
* you signed up Monday, November 14th.
* you asked a question. you determined that it had nothing to do with Drupal core, which severely limits your ability to ask for help here (so many modules, so little users of em).
* in asking that question, you had the same attitude you're showing now ("hope that I can find more support here than seems to be available through the forums")
* you asked your second question on the 20th. you get a mere four responses, of which none are the answers you seem to like ("Oh, Anna! That's simple! That's Issue #41243. Click 'Fix' for it to go away! . . . .. Nice tits, btw.")
* you send frustrated letter to the list.
I'm surprised that you'll get *any* decent responses after this. And you should be quite pleased to know that *you* controlled that destiny, all by your widdle old self.
Can you, for a second, actually *think* about what you're saying? You're suggesting that we've deliberately programmed some bug in the system that deletes random files and now, in our infinite wisdom, are choosing not to find the bug by asking seemingly unrelated questions. But, oh wait, it doesn't *delete* random files: no, the files are still there on the server. And, oh wait! It doesn't actually *delete* the entries from the database - they must still be there too (since you suggest Drupal is still trying to "call" them from the correct URL). With all this helpful information you've given, *of course* we're going to ask you for more investigative information. Especially when no one else on the list, or in my recent memory of Issues, has reported this.
The short end of it is:
* answer our questions. politely. * be patient. politely.
If you want to be rude, then I'll be more than happy to call you my customer. I work at $75 an hour for impolite people, and my Paypal address is the same as my email.
Could you give us the URL (yes! even this innocent bit of information, which you so nicely left out is FAAAR more helpful than the stopmotion you've put into your place with this thread. Congratulations!) where Drupal is calling the files correctly, but they're not showing up?
Quite frankly, it appears that you appear the arrogant one here... you say my first question "I decided had nothing to do with the Drupal core" well Mr mind reader, better clean your crystal ball. I gave up on trying to get help for that one because nothing that was suggested came close to correcting the problem. Instead I wrote my own paypal module. And guess what??? It works!
As for providing a link, sure thing if you are prepared to pay the $30USD subscription fee to enter the site.
I am reminded of another "support" group, where I posted a solution to a bug around 3 months ago, but because I was a new member there, and female, they are still trying to figure out how to repair the problem, having rejected my solution without trying it out. Meanwhile I do not suffer from that bug.
No, I am not suggesting at all that anyone deliberately programmed bugs into the system. Take a look through the module list and see how many of those carry a warning about the module being a patch up solution that still has bugs.
It appears you had better get off your high horse. You charge a $75 per hour fee.... hell by the time you got through reading the problem properly and understanding the issue, I would be bankrupt.

Hi Anna,
it seems to me that at least a number of us in this discussion have put some time and effort into helping you with this issue and your issue with cron.
I'd feel better about that if I were not included, however unintentionally, in your reply to a specific posting.
You may find that you have better success with your support requests if you spend a little more time composing your requests - for example, I found I didn't have enough information in your posts to formulate any hypotheses as to the cause of the problems you reported. Please read
http://drupal.org/forum-posting
All of the suggestions there apply to support requests via the mailing list.
If I may make a few suggestions - from your postings, it seems that your web hosting company is not particularly Drupal-friendly. You might look around for companies that specialize in hosting Drupal sites, if you are running a commercial site. Most of these would have standard modules pre-configured, so that you don't have to fight with setting them up.
Also, since you are running a commercial site - my own experience is that the quality of support I receive vs. my expectations for support are usually much more aligned when I hire paid support :)
I hope that you find the solution to your problems, and that Drupal will prove to be a good choice for you in the long run.
Best regards, Djun
Anna, you are personally Attaacking me here, after i spent MY time offering to help YOU with YOUR problem. please get lost and solve it by yourself.
I am very very angry about your post, and extremely dissapointed by people like you. Just so you know
Bye

Anna,
upload has a few bugs. The 'list' field in table 'files' sometimes get reset to 0.
In addition, when you do a node copy, the files dont get copied. you have to use drupal's built in file_copy.
If you are not very familar with php, I suggest using the 'attachment' module. However, beware that a lot of contributed modules assume you are using upload.

Thank you vrao. The strange part is that the first time I noticed this happen, it was approximately 3 out of 14 images that were added to my gallery using the image module. The most recent occurrence was with the attachments module, where a document "vanished".
However, your response has been of the greatest assistance.
