Some theme proposals for SEO

One of the websites I developed has a reasonably strong presence on Google News. However, many, if not most, of the links Google has are titled "Add New Comment". I wondered why, and came to the conclusion that google is reading the "links" tags that contain that link as containing the permalink. So I have changed that class tag to "action". While I was at it, I also changed the title tags to h1. I will watch over the coming week how Google News reads the content with these changes, and report my results here. But I think that SEO is something that is worthwhile for consideration as an ongoing theme development topic. Already Drupal sites do quite well. On regular Google search, sites seem rather well optimized. But these anamolies, such as with Google News, point to areas where we might look to improve. Does anyone else have thoughts or experiences on SEO, and how we all might modify existing themes and alter approaches to future themes? search bar

Using the theme option to turn on the search bar in 4.7, I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the search button to stay on the same line as the search input field. The div between the input and button is causing a line break I don't want. Using css to white-space: nowrap; on #search is futile. Mac IE is no more...

http://www.jimmygrewal.com/?p=187 Bittersweet news indeed, but for us themers, this will certainly help out, no longer do we need Mac IE specific hacks, this browser has been phased out and as word spreads and people adopt Safari, our CSS should start to become a little bit cleaner, and a little bit easier to maintain and write. Just some forward thinking for anyone working on new themes (myself included). ted (m3avrck)

Programmatic CSS

Hello- I have not done a lot of theme hacking, but it seems to me that generally a theme is composed of static CSS and dynamically created (X)HTML. I am wondering if it is also possible to create dynamic CSS. For example, in the current system, it is easy to create zebra striping by alternating classes on markup (say block divs). By alternating between .zebra1 and .zebra2, a theme creator can highlight every other block on a page. Of course, the classes themselves are defined in a static CSS file that is fetched from the server. I was recently looking at Eric Meyer's Color Blender: http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/tools/color-blend/ And I thought: wouldn't it be cool to do this programmatically on the server side? (To fade my blocks down the screen, for example.) The obvious solution would be to tag each block with .fadeN class, where N is updated for each block. After I made all the blocks, I could go back and make N classes, each with a different color, faded from color1 to color2. Is this possible? It requires the construction of a CSS file on the fly. I could not just add the styles inline, because I don't know how many blocks there are until the end (something of a halting problem). It would be easy to link to 'dynamic.css' in the file (this can be done statically), but how would I get the dynamic.css file properly served to the user? Moreover, it might be better to code each .css file with a unique identifier, so that the styles won't be improperly cached. Another option might be to make an inline <style> ... </style> section and stick it back in the DOM. Of the available options, this sounds like the easiest. In the end, it might be best to create something like the forms API to manage dynamic CSS. It could be a very powerful feature, and easily encapsulated into a few functions (add_css(), render_css(), etc): <?php $css['classname1']['classname2'] = array( 'color' => '#12AB00', 'text-align' => 'left' .... ); // equivalent to //.classname1 .classname2 {color: #12AB00; text-aling: left;} Add_css($css); ?php> Thoughts, suggestions? Hi all, If you go to this page: http://drupal.org/support You will see a variety of information for someone looking for support. However, if you go to the main Drupal Themes page, you are simply confronted with a bunch of themes to download. I suggest we create a Launching page for the Main Themes page too. We should have at least the following: 1. Prominent Large Image pointing to the Themes Gallery (Think Drupal News Letter "Ad" on the front page of Drupal.org) Perhaps links to themes hosted elsewhere. (offsite from drupal.org) 2. Themes Help area that lists the following links: - Basic Themes Help: http://drupal.org/node/39451 - Manage inconsistancy in themes: http://drupal.org/node/37156 3. There is a module to add a block for changing the font size. I'm with Ber, though, and ended up uninstalling it because it made more sense to just let the user set it in their browser. usability and accessibility improvement

comments in $links --> move it elsewhere

I want to move the number of comments 'indicator' (i.e. 3 Comments) elsewhere. (Yet keep the original $links intact.) I want something like this in my node.tpl.php: Comments in this Entry: # (where # is any number, 0 on up, and the # linked to the comments.) I've tried a few things (like comment_num_replies<http://drupaldocs.org/api/head/function/comment_num_replies> ($pid) and others from drupaldocs, but I usually got an "array" or a total of all comments on my site. Has anyone figured this out? Any way to do this? (drupal 4.6). silverwing
