How do I send a file to the user?

Hi I want to do the following: The users fills out a form and depending on that data an excel export is generated. The user should be prompted to store/open the file. The code to create the excel data is working fine. But I don't know how to do the file sending stuff? Is hook_file_download the right way to go? If yes, after I have the excel file content stored in a variable how does it get to the implementation of hook_file_download? TIA Ernst

Reproducing 'login does not stick' error - what does an expert want me to do?

Good evening all. I'm running the latest 4.7 code (cvs up as of tonight). I have finally managed to reproduce a problem that several of my users have reported, and one that I see chatter on in the d.o forums. It is the/a problem where you log in with a valid username/password, you appear in the list of users that are on-line, but the login does not 'take' and you are given an access denied screen when redirected to path user/##. I have riddled session.inc with watchdog statements and am willing to install whatever code a core developer may want me to run to gather evidence. This is running to the development version of my site, so I have a lot of leeway on what I can install. I can authenticate and create new sessions just fine in FF 2.0. IE7, running on the same physical box, will not complete the authentication. From my watchdog logs I see that the session is being regenerated as part of processing the login form. The new session id is written to the database, then sess_close() is called, then the page continues loading and creates a new session for an anonymous user. From reading the d.o forums I gather this problem may have continued into D5 RC 1, but it was not clear if it was fixed in the final version. If one of you is looking for information on this problem, I think I'm in a position to provide it. Scott

Drupal 6 release schedule

Hello world, I'm mailing to talk a bit more about the Drupal 6 release schedule. Drupal 5 had a 3 month development period, followed by a 5 month code freeze. For Drupal 6, I'd like to propose a 4 month development period, followed by a code freeze. As with Drupal 5, the code freeze will be guaranteed to be at least 2 months to give module authors time to plan and catch up. Forms API "Widgets", AJAX and non-JavaScript

I've done a couple of projects that needed custom "widgets" to use within Forms API, something that you might write into code with something like.... $form['some_text'] = array('#type' => 'textfield', ....); $form['event_date'] = drupal_widget_date($title, $default, $options....); ... I've done stuff like this for CiviCRM objects like contacts and groups, but the idea of getting these kinds of things into reusable functions seems pretty attractive, since: * It makes it fairly simple to implement some kinds of custom JavaScript widgets transparently. * You could get consistent "fallback" behavior for non-JavaScript capable browsers. * The code is easier to understand, and probably more reliable if you're doing something unusual. Has anyone developed anything along this lines? I'm especially interested in finding easier ways to integrate jquery-type widgets for more flexible kinds of autocomplete (say, combo-boxes instead of the simple pop-up select that autocomplete does now), and integrating safer and saner non-JavaScript behavior to a form field that are more consistent. I'm not sure if I'm being clear enough here, but do any of you have ideas similar to this, and how have you implemented them? Thanks, Rob

hi folks, most of you know by now, but just in case... i'm going to be on vacation for basically all of february. to prepare for my absence, i've managed to complete a flurry of bug fixes and new features for project* and cvs.module in the past couple of weeks. so, i think we're in pretty good shape with the release system. thankfully, merlinofchaos has come on board as another maintainer for project* and cvs.module (not like he doesn't have too many other things to do already, but he volunteered, so how could i say 'no'?). also, walkah has agreed to help maintain signup.module while i'm gone (my "other" module -- sadly unloved due to project* taking priority)... diff.module also got some much-needed attention, and finally has 4.7.x support: http://drupal.org/node/114734 ;) i've unsubscribed from the other mailing lists (infra, webmasters, etc), and will unsub from this one as soon as this message goes through. i will check my drupal inbox (this email address) a few times while i'm gone, so if there's some kind of major disaster that only i know how to solve, all hope is not lost. ;) good luck with 6.x development, and thanks again to merlinofchaos and walkah! -derek (dww) p.s. if you happen to care: i'll be in recife, brazil, studying and playing maracatu for the weeks leading up to and including carnaval. a much needed break from hacking code. ;) there's some info about maracatu on my band's site, if you want to learn more: http://baterialucha.org/node/181 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maracatu

I don't wait to be asked to defend people or ideas, I do what I feel is right. To others: Yeah I know Gerhard and others are rude to newbies, I've been involved with Drupal for almost three years now and I've seen plenty of it. I just happened to be paying attention this time and felt I needed to say something. There are a lot of "newer" people that have made really valuable contributions to Drupal recently, and I have to wonder how many people get driven away by bullshit like this. If someone asks a question then we should strive to answer it, and if someone takes the time to write up their thoughts on a subject it shouldn't be met with a condescending attitude. Some of these same people bemoan patches not getting rolled or reviewed - well it starts with not being a jerk to people on the dev mailing list or on the forums for that matter.
