Dealing with Cache

Hey guys, I was wondering how you guys are dealing with cache/optimizations on your development machine, between drupal cache, panels cache, browser cache and other css/js compression settings etc.. I've found it difficult to deal with all of them. I have a feature/module that deal with production settings so i can develop without annoying production settings (css/js compression, drupal cache, theme registry, devel settings among others...) and revert them back on production when the new release is online. Problem is i can't find a way to deal with panels cache. The question is: how can i find a way to disable panels cache easily while on a dev environment ? (using drush cc or emptying the cache with devel is still a pain) How do you guys are doing it ? Thank you !

Views relationships and a prolonged -doh- moment

I think I must be having a prolonged -doh- moment. I have 12 content types defined (D7). I have two content types that are related on a common field. My prolonged -doh- moment is coming from my thinking that in D6, in going to to define a relationship in Views, I would have found fields listed in the relationship box from which to select. I find that there are no applicable fields in the relationship field list...none at all related to any content (entity) type (I also find the same thing with the Sort criteria box). I opened an issue, http://drupal.org/node/909528, describing this, but I'm getting the feeling based on the dialog that there is something I'm not remembering correctly, or that I'm not describing the issue clearly after several attempts. Ignoring Pass by Reference

I am coding a hook_comment, which normally specifies "&$a1" in the parameters. It would be helpful to just add some additional stuff to that array before calling drupal_write_record. I have no idea whether the additional data would "upset" the comment module and I don't really need to modify the form data anyway. Would it be reasonable to just drop the ampersand from the parameters? I would definitely add a comment that I'm doing that. Nancy

Create files programmatically

I already have a functioning module that creates some CSV files for my customer. It appears now that they are going to be expanding the file inventory, so time to get more creative. Does anyone know of a module that allows them to input a list of fields they want and creates a table with that schema? There will pretty much only be int and varchar fields, so I don't need to handle everything. My module can already largely be otherwise driven by the schema. Nancy

Drupal 7 API Change notification: Multiple important changes

*We try to notify this list when API changes are made in Drupal 7, so contrib and custom developers have a chance to fix their code before they have the pain of figuring out why it's broken.* Today there are quite a number of changes and some will require changes by many existing D7 modules. *The first two are pervasive* and will most likely affect you if you've developed D7 modules that provide fields or use the Managed File API. (issue <http://drupal.org/node/902264>) *hook_field_schema*() must be moved from the .module to the .install file. This affects *every module that implements fields. *Please update your module. In the process, if you use t() in that function, turn it into $t(). (issue <http://drupal.org/node/874326#comment-3430420>) *Managed File API functions like file_copy() can no longer use bare paths* for filepaths, they must use URIs with public://, private://, or temporary:// (or another Drupal-provided scheme). This will probably break your module if you use file_copy(), file_move(), or the like. Check here<http://randyfay.com/node/73>for a posting on file API changes that have gone in recently. (issue <http://drupal.org/node/878092#comment-3435332>) Format of links in an entity's $entity->links has changed. If your module provides an entity and it provides $entity->links, you'll have to fix this. You'll see from this patch still in the issue <http://drupal.org/node/878092#comment-3388496>that the same change is about to happen to comments, so you'll probably want to watch this issue. (issue <http://drupal.org/node/756762#comment-3435462>) AJAX Form API changes. These affect you only if your module uses #ajax['path'], implementing a custom callback (which is discouraged and almost always unnecessary in D7). But you'll want to read the summary<http://drupal.org/node/756762#comment-3435462>if you do use #ajax['path']. (issue <http://drupal.org/node/757154#comment-3408064>) More obscure change to Form API so hook_form_BASE_FORM_ID_alter() is called between hook_form_alter() and hook_form_FORM_ID_alter(), If you don't implement hook_forms() this probably does not affect you. Agree completely with what's been said about Linux/LAMP. I bought an old, old Dell D420 (2006) laptop for a demonstration earlier this year of what you could do with older hardware and a LAMP stack. I have 1GB RAM, a 60GB HDD, and a puny 800Mhz processor...and I'm churning along in Drupal quite decently. I recently moved off-grid and I am unexpectedly having to rely on this laptop (less energy usage than my big dual-core desktop) ... but it works just fine. (Side benefit to Linux development: it's just a heck of a lot more fun than Windows! You're back in charge of your own machine - and that's a good feeling...) Chana

Cron run exceeded the time limit and was aborted.

I have a function that runs a few updates and displays a list of what it did. In order to get caught up from a long period of neglect, I decided to add it into the hook_cron. Every time I invoke cron, I get "Cron run exceeded the time limit and was aborted" yet it completes in far less than 30 seconds. Any ideas how my code could be inadvertantly triggering this? some weeks ago I offered a patch to module z3950. In this patch a new content type (based on CCK) is introduced and some nodes are initially filled using function of module "alternate_content_copy". I would be interested to get some responce if this approach looks acceptable to advanced Drupal developers.
