Hello World. The page split code reorganization is nearly done. There's only 3 modules that still need to be reorganized, and all three have patches pending: Trigger: http://drupal.org/node/181576 Comment: http://drupal.org/node/163499 Locale: http://drupal.org/node/187398 The first two should be an easy review for people still getting their feet wet. Locale is a bit tricker because we're reorganizing code out of the locale.inc file, which was being used as a sort of poor-man's page split until now. Please, let's get these committed before someone fixes another bug and I have to redo them yet again! :-) --Larry Garfield

Generate Drupal code from (textfile) specs

At http://drupal.org/project/builder, I have started a module that (currently only) generates a node module from textfile specs. The module uses YAML as its specification language, a simple text format that has become popular as the configuration language for recent MVC frameworks. I believe that exploiting the new APIs in Drupal 6, this approach can be extended to describe a whole Drupal site including installation profiles, views, mappings between taxonomy and menu, theme files etc. The module somewhat contradicts the traditional Drupal way of providing an admin GUI for site configuration. Using text files as input, however, allows me to concentrate on the output side if things. As a benefit, text files can be kept in a code repository. Once the feature set grows richer, maybe the module can even generate its own GUI by creating a set of FAPI data structures. Please, have a look at it and tell me what you think. -- Olav Schettler

Please be careful marking release nodes "Security update"

Dear Drupal developers who manage contributions on drupal.org... As you've probably noticed, when you create a release node for your contribution(s), there's a "Release type" vocabulary where you can select from a few terms: Security update Bug fixes New features You're supposed to use this to indicate what kind of release your node represents, to give users of your contribution a sense of if they want to install it or not. For example, if you're adding new features, you should say so, since some users might not want to upgrade something that's potentially unstable and might break their sites, etc. However, if you mark a release node a "Security update", that has a bunch of other side effects and implications, so please only do so if your release is actually fixing a security problem: 1) The release node will not be published once the packaging script creates the tarball. This is so that the security team can verify the release does in fact address a security problem, that the draft of the security announcement (SA) is ready to be published, etc. See this issue for more info: http://drupal.org/node/153973 2) Once a "Security update" release node is published, the Update status module (now in D6 core) will freak out on every site running your module, with big nasty red warnings and emails (if so configured) about the fact that the site is insecure and needs to be updated immediately. 3) Everyone subscribed to the "Security updates" RSS feed will get pinged that there's another security release. ... Therefore, a "Security update" release is a *BIG DEAL*. You need to coordinate with the security team to make sure an SA goes out with your release, all of your users are going to get nasty warnings and scare tactics to try to get them to update ASAP, etc. So, if you don't mean it, please do *NOT* use this taxonomy term. If you do, you use up the precious resources of the security team (and/or d.o infrastructure team) to investigate your release node, clear the bogus term, manually publish it for you, etc, etc. Thanks, -Derek (dww)

Hi, Anybody has any ideas about this case? I put really all details in my mail, hoping to spark quick clues from Drupal gurus on the list. It took me weeks to pinpoint the problem, but now I am totally stuck, wondering what is special in Drupal that breaks the applet data loading functionality... Even the faintest clue might help. Now, when the page that contains the HG tag loads, the Java applet appears, but it needs to call data from the server. This data is provided by a file that resides in a folder of hypergraph, namely http://quidne.vacilando.org/sites/all/modules/hypergraph/graphs/hg.php (+ some arguments). Note: in the same folder there is a .dtd file that is necessary for the XML data. Quite simple, really. Worked fine on other (non Drupal) sites where I implemented it - e.g. http://www.vacilando.org frontpage But on Drupal, and not only on my multisite install (several users reported it), there is a silly bug: After you open the browser (FF and IE; tested on WinXP) for the first time (with or without clearing cache, I found), the Java applet would throw a cache-related error. When reloaded page, and on all subsequent loads, the Java would display correct data, without any problem. So I looked everywhere and tried to avoid this Java error, finding that JRE 6 has a bug related to cache, etc. Many days after I realized that this error (after fresh opening of the browser) did not occur in other websites I had made that feature the same applet. So I changed focus to the generated XML data, tweaking it to perfection.. But I could not get rid of the bug! I then thought that perhaps I am not properly initializing Drupal. This is in the data provider file hg.php : drupalize(); function drupalize() { while (!@stat('./includes/bootstrap.inc')) { chdir ('..'); } require_once './includes/bootstrap.inc'; drupal_bootstrap(DRUPAL_BOOTSTRAP_FULL); } That should be fine, no? Just to be sure, I tried to put just plain XML file here - not dynamically generated, for a test. Still the same problem!! Then I put both files (the static test XML and the DTD file) elsewhere, on a different subdomain ( in http://www.vacilando.org/temp/tst/ ). Wow -- surprise -- no bug!!!!!! Why??? Why does it not work when XML and DTD are in http://quidne.vacilando.org/sites/all/modules/hypergraph/graphs/ and it works when XML and DTD are in http://www.vacilando.org/temp/tst/ ? No idea! I have a hunch - but I need your thoughts here... the XML file definitely needs its DTD file. Could it be that something - either some consequences of multisite, or the .htaccess rules in the root of Drupal, or something else (what?) cause that the XML does not "see" its DTD even though it is in the same folder..? I tried to put an empty .htaccess file in the folder http://quidne.vacilando.org/sites/all/modules/hypergraph/graphs/ trying to override the basic Drupal's .htaccess - no change. Another suspicion - the Java applet seems to be loading before the page loads, or at least sometimes (when cache has been emptied from the browser before it was closed). Could it be that Drupal somehow forbids anything accessing module directories before session/cookies are set or something? Also tried to put the two files into a folder in the files folder ( in http://quidne.vacilando.org/sites/quidne.vacilando.org/files/tst/ ) - same bug. Any idea? Anybody has experience with a similar problem? If any of you want to test the problem in action, don't go to my website (too many on-going dev changes), just get v1.2 from http://drupal.org/project/hypergraph and install it ( then go to /hypergraph ). How can we renew our core data APIs to be consistent and even more elegant and efficient, to facilitate fully transactional web services, and to take full advantage of PHP 5?
