For those of you who like reading performance tuning stuff: http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/2007/08/16/how-much-overhead-is-caused-… This could be particularly relevant to Drupal.org if we are still getting temp tables written to disk. It turns out that even when we specify MEMORY for temp tables, MySQL still has the option of writing to disk if other buffers aren't large enough. -R

Drupal tests for dummies? (SimpleTest, Selenium, DAST oh my)

Hello world, I want to start integrating tests into code I write. I now sit in a room with 5 Java/RoR ninjas and they make fun of PHP and the fact that I didn't know what JUnit was. :P I want to be able to talk trash back to them. I know there is simpletest, selenium and I saw some things about this http://drupal.org/project/DAST as well. Is there one that many agree on as being the future for Drupal tests? If so, any recommendations on where to start? I looked into simpletest and it seemed nice enough, but I'd like to jump in to the right boat. Thanks, RobRoy

Views exposed filters hierarchical display

Hello, I am building a website with lots of media products on it, which should be sort- and filterable. I have set up one content type with CCK for each media type. These content types all have different taxonomy vocabs assigned to them, as well as special CCK fields. (Example see below.) I have created a bunch of nodes using my CCK custom content types. Now I want to create an area, where the user can filter and narrow down his/her selection of media. I have built this filter area with 'Views' module, using exposed filters. --- I have the following problem: Is it possible with views.module that you start with one drop down selection menu (in my example taxonomy vocab 'Media type'), and depending on what the user selects there, he/she is presented with the next selection of dropdown menus? **Set-up:** A) - Taxonomy vocab 'Media type' --- Taxonomy term 'Book', automatically assigned to content type 'Book' --- Taxonomy term 'Magazine', automatically assigned to content type 'Magazine' --- Taxonomy term 'Video', automatically assigned to content type 'Video' B) - Content type 'Book' --- Taxonomy vocabulary 'Book type', assigned to content type 'Book' ----- Taxonomy term 'Hardback' ----- Taxonomy term 'Paperback' - Content type 'Magazine' --- CCK field: ISSN number - Content type 'Video' --- Taxonomy vocabulary 'Film format', assigned to content type 'Video' ----- Taxonomy term 'VHS' ----- Taxonomy term 'DVD' ----- Taxonomy term 'Download' **Scenario:** User goes to filter area. First of all he/she sees a drop-down menu with the vocab for 'Media type'. After having selected media type 'Book', he/she is presented with a second dropdown menu, containing the taxonomy terms for taxonomy vocabulary 'Book type'. Do I make any sense? Critical bug in CCK - help from field module developpers needed

A critical bug has been discovered in CCK field data storage, which can result in possible data loss under some (rare) circumstances. Only a very limited number of field types are potentially affected, we need the help of contrib CCK fields developpers to help us list exactly which ones, so that we can extensively test the patch before committing it. very short d.o downtime later today or tomorrow

Hi folks, sorry for the short notice. I just realized that some recent fixes to cvs.module and project* are going to require some really short d.o downtime when I update the sources. There are a few db updates that have to run, and between the time I upgrade the source and run update.php, all sorts of CVS-account related things will blow up with SQL errors and the like. So, my plan is to: a) disable the CVS repos (no commits or tags allowed). b) backup the cvs-related DB tables that are effected. c) take d.o offline with a "upgrading d.o modules, back in 5 minutes" message. d) do the upgrade. e) bring d.o back online. f) re-enable the CVS repos. The whole thing should take 10 minutes, with d.o itself down for maybe 3 or 4. Any objections? Thanks, -Derek (dww)

XML Data to Custom Node Import - where to start? Offer to develop?

Requirements: Assumption: Input file = standard XML file {e.g http://www.w3schools.com/xml/note.xml} i) Enable user input of custom XML page by provision of web address url to an XML page (in similar fashion to feed; but it is not a feed) Possible enable user input via browser paste (thoughts for/against welcome) ii) Primary parse to display and allow 'deselection' of fields from XML import that are not required (by default, or set default to 'select' required) iii) Import XML (with additional parameters set in ii) to [custom] node type iii) Enable edit of imported node list (such as deletion of non-required records from list - can/may arguably be done with content listing by type) iv) Enable linking of key# data field in XML import to key# data field in existing nodes (of type) for duplicate identification and/or replacement [or default global replace - achieved by relevant call to drupal]. My findings suggest that: - there is nothing currently available to import XML pages with custom data sets - there are some that require same - CCK and Views may be suitable to help make this a generic contribution by way of creating destination node type? Also 'know of node import' but not yet investigated relevancy (question to note - if use CCK do we have access to data [ie is it stored seperately?] in DB for later export or additional requirments?) - there are some existing API's for RSS/XML but I'm not sure if anything of use for this application - there is some 'Google SUmmer of Code' work to look at feeds; but I do not think this is relevant. I have not developed anything custom for Drupal for a couple of years and find the mix of contribs in this area 'confusing' so please lend me your wisdom: - any suggested approaches to re-use existing API's and contributions - any existing projects underway that this might impact or work with - any willing developers / helpers /shadowers to help ramp up and/or to build a module for this Additional Comments: This capability would be great for commercial applications. If I do this it is likely to be in the near future and to customer time constraints I would be happy to contribute back to drupal. As you can see this i not specd yet but these are my ideas so far based on my client requirement and 'quick' initial look at available options Any head start with better approach, where to look, who to talk to and what to research to measure viability/effort required would be very welcome indeed. regards Chris.

Reminder: String Freeze @ RC 1

Just a reminder that, like last release, we should shoot to have all strings in core "frozen" by RC 1. A string freeze means that there can be no changes to anything in a t () function (user/admin-facing text) after that point, unless it fixes some kind of "critical" bug (typos, just plain wrong, etc.). This is particularly important, given that Drupal 6 is going to be our "internationalization release" ... the quicker the translators have a solid base from which to translate, the more translations we can get out the door by release time! So before then (no idea when this will be for sure, but it would probably be good to get these wrapped up within the next month to be safe) is the time to roll the following kinds of patches (or create issues to identify problems): - Improving documentation in places so that it is more clear. - Adding new documentation where none exists. - Fixing grammar mistakes, typos, etc. For any new issues you create, please preface them "String freeze: [description of thing here]" so that they're easy to find. Incidentally, these are also great patches for absolutely *anyone* wanting to get their fingers into core -- no coding skills required! There are folks standing by in #drupal who would love to walk you through how to make your first core patch. :) -Angie

Upload module: upload/js permissions issue

In order to upload a file with the Drupal upload.module, you need the "upload files" and "view uploaded files" permissions. My module, OG User Roles (http://www.drupal.org/project/og_user_roles) assigns roles to users based upon the group(s) they are in. So, if a user has the "upload files" permission for Group A, he should be able to upload a file in Group A. What is now happening is that: 1. Group A user with the "upload files" permission in Group A is attempting to upload a file in Group A. In node "create" or "edit" screen, he goes to "File attachments" section. 2. User clicks on "Browse" button. He locates and selects file. 3. User clicks on "Attach" button to upload file. File appears to upload, then this error message pops up in a separate window: http://drupal.org/files/issues/og_user_role_errmsg_0.gif 4. User clicks on "OK" button to clear error message. Attached file doesn't appear in "File Atachments" section. "Attach" button also disappears. 5. User clicks on "Preview" button. Node previews, WITH the attached file. 6. User clicks on "Submit" button. Node is saved with the attached file. So, the problem isn't that the file isn't uploaded or attached, the problem is the Access denied pop-up window. From the error log I see that the url in question is: upload/js. Can someone help me out with where exactly in the upload process this error message is coming from, and suggestions on how to get around it?
