Well for starters it might be a nice general rule to just not send anything if you are only going to write something that is not only unproductive but also rude and condescending. Just *try* to put yourself in the shoes of a new developer to the Drupal project for a second. Is it better to be completely condescending when someone asks a question thereby giving them a bad impression of the developer community or would it be better to either a) not say anything or b) be polite and helpful? Option b shows leadership because you've potentially won a new developer to work on the project. Option a is available if you really don't care or can't do option b. Now if someone is being clearly annoying a personal message to that person may be in order, but it certainly isn't out of line for someone new to the list to ask a question like that and if your standard is that they should be aware of every conversation that has ever taken place since drupal began, well that's just ridiculous and insane. People get interested in things topically, and the first impulse isn't--and shouldn't be--maybe I should consult google to see if that was discussed before because that indicates some kind of final decision when that isn't what this is. I've seen long standing things change at the drop of a hat when someone makes a case for them, and that should be encouraged.

How do I send a file to the user?

Hi I want to do the following: The users fills out a form and depending on that data an excel export is generated. The user should be prompted to store/open the file. The code to create the excel data is working fine. But I don't know how to do the file sending stuff? Is hook_file_download the right way to go? If yes, after I have the excel file content stored in a variable how does it get to the implementation of hook_file_download? TIA Ernst

Reproducing 'login does not stick' error - what does an expert want me to do?

Good evening all. I'm running the latest 4.7 code (cvs up as of tonight). I have finally managed to reproduce a problem that several of my users have reported, and one that I see chatter on in the d.o forums. It is the/a problem where you log in with a valid username/password, you appear in the list of users that are on-line, but the login does not 'take' and you are given an access denied screen when redirected to path user/##. I have riddled session.inc with watchdog statements and am willing to install whatever code a core developer may want me to run to gather evidence. This is running to the development version of my site, so I have a lot of leeway on what I can install. I can authenticate and create new sessions just fine in FF 2.0. IE7, running on the same physical box, will not complete the authentication. From my watchdog logs I see that the session is being regenerated as part of processing the login form. The new session id is written to the database, then sess_close() is called, then the page continues loading and creates a new session for an anonymous user. From reading the d.o forums I gather this problem may have continued into D5 RC 1, but it was not clear if it was fixed in the final version. If one of you is looking for information on this problem, I think I'm in a position to provide it. Scott

Hello world, I'm mailing to talk a bit more about the Drupal 6 release schedule. Drupal 5 had a 3 month development period, followed by a 5 month code freeze. For Drupal 6, I'd like to propose a 4 month development period, followed by a code freeze. As with Drupal 5, the code freeze will be guaranteed to be at least 2 months to give module authors time to plan and catch up. Forms API "Widgets", AJAX and non-JavaScript

I've done a couple of projects that needed custom "widgets" to use within Forms API, something that you might write into code with something like.... $form['some_text'] = array('#type' => 'textfield', ....); $form['event_date'] = drupal_widget_date($title, $default, $options....); ... I've done stuff like this for CiviCRM objects like contacts and groups, but the idea of getting these kinds of things into reusable functions seems pretty attractive, since: * It makes it fairly simple to implement some kinds of custom JavaScript widgets transparently. * You could get consistent "fallback" behavior for non-JavaScript capable browsers. * The code is easier to understand, and probably more reliable if you're doing something unusual. Has anyone developed anything along this lines? I'm especially interested in finding easier ways to integrate jquery-type widgets for more flexible kinds of autocomplete (say, combo-boxes instead of the simple pop-up select that autocomplete does now), and integrating safer and saner non-JavaScript behavior to a form field that are more consistent. I'm not sure if I'm being clear enough here, but do any of you have ideas similar to this, and how have you implemented them? Thanks, Rob

I know you probably didn't intend it to come off like that Gerhard, but this is the kind of brush off response that people really need to be more conscious of--and you aren't the only one guilty of it. Taking the "we've already covered that and damn you for interrupting my day" attitude with new developers isn't the best way to bring them into the fold. It might have been nice to at the very least provide a link to that previous discussion since you recall it and you will probably have a better chance of finding it than someone else would. The person in question may not even know how to access the archives, I sure didn't for quite a while when I started. HEAD is not so headless now

Hi, Today we removed about one gazillion notices and most tabs are back (not all). Page titles can't be far behind. It's possible that by the time you read they are back. More tabs, node/[node: nid]/edit syntax is expected next, estimated time frame is just a few days. hook_menu_helper will make this possible. Then we grab the big hook splitter and produce at least two (hook_menu and hook_router) or likely three (hook_tab) hooks out of what we have now as hook_menu. I hope by this time the permission patch http://drupal.org/node/73874 and the argument refactor patch http://drupal.org/node/111347 will land. If that's so then we can finish the navigation block. Past that, we will look into editing menu. Regards NK

Contrib longevity

And on an entirely different topic, I've a question for the other contrib maintainers out there. With Drupal 5 out, most modules are or will be upgraded to it. Drupal 4.7 itself is in maintenance mode. What about contribs for it? If you maintain a contrib module, will you be providing just bug fixes for the 4.7 version after your 5 version is released? Will you maintain feature development on both? If so, for how long? Mostly I'm asking to see if there's a consensus on what the "responsible maintainer" thing to do is, since I've a few modules that I'm in the process of upgrading and I'm not how long I should bother to deal with feature requests for the 4.7 versions.
