'name' column length in variables

Hi, This is more a policy thing then a bug, IMO. Drupal has some columns harcoded in length, most notably the 'node.type' column and the 'variable.name' colmn. I ran into a problem today again, with a contrib breaking because it made its variables like variable_get('usernodes_foo_' . $type) //where $type is the node type name. You get it, that can grow very long. Drupal exploded there completely, because MySQL choked on already existing types. There aer loads of ways around this: use shorter node types in my (cck) configuration,. Use shorter names that prepend the $type etcetc. But I am sure that a patch will not fix this. I mean, we can make the 'name' column longer, but there is a limit, we will hit at some time again. Making a field longer is IMO only patching the error, not the cause of the error. Any good ideas for this? Should we start on a unique_name($string, $length) function? A function that will create unique names? Table node_access: Deleting rows filled with 0s for all 3 grants.

Helo, everybody. I have an issue concerning access modules. Table node_access has too many lines. (nid * role_id) Concerning taxonomy_access, there is an idea to remove (and not generate) those lines in table 'node_access' where all three types of grants are 0.(grant_view = 0 and grant_upadet = 0 and grant_delete = 0). Because actually only records which grants some permission affect node_access() behaviour. What do you guys, think about it? Does this have any drawback in your opinion? For troubleshooting or to be able to check integrity of table 'node_access', I would definitely generate at least one line per node, even if it is filled with zeros. (so that all 'nid' would be inside table 'node_access'). I have an issue with Taxonomy_access about this: 'Prevent taxonomy_access from populating node_access table more than necessary.' http://drupal.org/node/54544 Many thanks for the support in advance. What do people think about mentioning the issue nid in the comment for some of the more trickier/obscure fixes? I'm not sure if this already being done - I haven't come across any instances of this. But adding the nid will save a lot of time and effort for everybody IMO.. Just a thought. Cheers, -K

HTML / Plain text emails

After the recent security announcement went out as HTML email there was a bit of chatter. Here is how to make things change: - Security announcements and Drupal newsletters are sent using the simplenews module, development will happen there. - There is a decent HTML to text converter in project module. If there is a use for it in core I'd be happy to add it, but for now I'd like to see it put in an .inc file which defines the necessary function(s) if they haven't already. Then this .inc can be thrown in any contributed module that needs it. - The mime headers part of multipart messages isn't too bad to write. The part we would stumble on is the actual HTML, but we aren't doing anything too fancy and it seems that no one had issues with the quality of the markup (disclaimer: I only skimmed the complaints). -- Neil Drumm http://delocalizedham.com/

This is just a reminder that it is usually not ok to commit to other people's modules or themes. Some people are ok with it, but most aren't. So please check with the current maintaner if you are allowed to commit directly. The only notable exception is translations and associated template files which should go into a po subdirectory. Activeselect - AJAX select boxes

The activeselect module is a new addition to Drupal contrib, that defines a new type of select form element. Each activeselect element has one or more 'targets' defined: the targets are other form elements - either regular select boxes, or other activeselect boxes. When the user selects a new option in an activeselect element, their selection is immediately sent back to the server (using AJAX), and the server sends back a list of new options with which to populate the 'target' elements. The activeselect module is here: http://drupal.org/node/49976 I am posting this message here, because I think that this kind of functionality could be of immense benefit in many of the UIs in Drupal contrib (and possibly even Drupal core). Activeselect is so far only being used by the category module (http://drupal.org/node/39683) but it has been designed with reusability in mind. It is a component that can increase the usability of complex forms, and if used properly, it can degrade gracefully. I would like to encourage all module developers to consider any user interfaces in your modules that could benefit from select boxes linked by AJAX, and to make use of the activeselect module if appropriate. How you integrate activeselect into a module is completely up to you. All it does is provide the framework and the necessary JS library: the real power of this module depends on what an activeselect callback function is programmed to do. In the case of the category module, it is quite significant. Instructions for developers have now been written, and can be found in the API.txt file included with the activeselect module. These instructions tell you everything you need to know, to start making use of activeselect elements in your module's forms. The module is still quite new, and although it has been thoroughly tested and it functions correctly (in IE and Gecko/FF - feedback on other browsers appreciated), it definitely still has some rough edges. In particular, the code could probably be a bit cleaner than it is (especially in the category module's callback implementation). Hi, http://drupaldocs.org/api/head/function/node_submit calls two functions: node_invoke - submit and nodeapi invoke submit. However, I canno find any reference to any use of that. Nor can I find any docs on what it should or may return. Is this an orfaned, old function? Should it be removed? Or should we document it instead? Is anyone using it at all, or am I simply missing something?
