Possibility of API *additions* post-code freeze?

For this volunteer project I'm working on, I'm developing an install profile. It occurs to me that there aren't really any nice ready-made functions for doing a lot of basic stuff in Drupal like: - Creating a role, with a given list of permissions - Adding a user to a role - Enabling an input format - Turning on/off a block - etc. I can try and roll patches for these as I go, however this is something I'm doing in my "spare" time so likely I won't have encountered even 1/100th of the possible optimizations by Sept 1, and will have time for rolling patches for very few of them, if any. And while I could create my own little helper module to define these, that means a lot of copy/paste from core which is constantly changing, so it makes sense for these changes to be in core. I could see the addition of some of these API functions also being useful for things like XML-RPC, and also for making it easier for people to create their own Drupal distributions. Erm, usability? ;) I'm wondering if it's possible to add functions like this to the API, and change core to use them, post-code freeze? I know we normally don't allow API changes, but this wouldn't be _changing_ anything, per se.. people calling huge_gargantuan_function($op = something) would still get the same behaviour. It's just that internally, huge_gargantuan_function would be split it up into helper functions that each did distinct things. Just curious. :) Thanks. -Angie

a new/old admin theme (which generally works now)

Hi, Seems like noone took care of doing a decent admin theme recently, but some people clearly think that a cleaned up and updated civicspace theme will do just fine. For this very reason, I picked up this instruction [1], and moved the civicspace admin theme to its own theme. Now in Drupal HEAD you have a selection to use a different theme for the admin pages, and this works nicely with it. Big screenshot available as screenshot-full.png for those not really interested :) [2]. IMHO it looks nice. The problem with this theme obviously is that it is just a half-an-hour conversion, only fixing the obvious 4.7 -> HEAD changes, without looking into cleaning it up and improving. The main admin index page for example looks bad with the new boxes improperly positioned. The reason I have done this port is to separate the admin theme from the civicspace theme, and encourage those, who needed this kickstart to look into fixing this up. Unfortunately I have no time until codefreeze to do it, so I would like to draw the attention to this progress and ask for others to help get it into Drupal. So feel free to tear this theme apart, clean it up, improve, update, do whatever you wish. Let me shout out some strong support for Dries's idea. I've been in the community for a year and seldom say anything on the dev list since I'm a business guy. BUT, All the statistics are great and IMHO no "regular" person is likely to find them or find them useful. The basic English in Dries' proposed block is almost more important than the data itself. I think Drupal is a fantastic community of developers. We need to create a fantastic community of site administrators and community of users. Never one to not put my money where my mouth is, I'm happy to help with things like doing the language for the block (I'm not a coder, so my potential contribution is limited). If you are coding it, feel free to drop me an email and I'll help on the language. Jeff, Since it's not leaping out at me, can you explain how this pull-form system allows the creation of multi-step forms? Also, your example doesn't include the definition of a submit button- is this always left off/added automatically? Can I make a form with multiple buttons with different values? Forms API II: Return of the Chx (you really need to read this)

Greetings, folks! There's been talk for the past week or so about the 'pull model' patch for Forms API that chx rolled. It's been committed after some furious rounds of polishing, and it removes many barriers for advanced use of the Forms API. It DOES, however, require some conversion/updates to existing functions that generate and display forms. Here's the quick and easy guide to the changes. 1) What changed and why? Previously, Forms API used a 'push model.' You built an array of form elements, then called drupal_get_form($form_id, $form) to 'push' it into the API for processing and rendering. This worked OK for many situations, but also made it terribly cumbersome for programmatically submitting forms (for import/export). It also made workflow-oriented systems that chained multiple forms together a lot more hacky and kludgy than necessary. Now, the Forms API uses a 'pull model.' You call drupal_get_form($form_id), and it 'pulls' the form from a builder function, then processes and renders it as appropriate. That means that existing modules need to separate their form-building code from their general page and content rendering code -- most already do this, but it's an important distinction, and making it 'official' allows the system to treat forms more consistently. 2) So, how do I convert my code? By default, Forms API will check for a function that shares the same name as the form's ID. For example: <?php function mymodule_edit_record($record) { $output = 'This is my edit page!'; $form['my_field'] = array( '#type' => 'textfield', '#title' => 'Record name', '#default_value' => $record->name, ); $output .= drupal_get_form('record_edit_form', $form); return $output; } ?> Would need to change to the following: <?php function mymodule_edit_record($record) { $output = 'This is my edit page!'; $output .= drupal_get_form('mymodule_edit_record_form', $record); return $output; } function mymodule_edit_record_form($record) { $form['my_field'] = array( '#type' => 'textfield', '#title' => 'Record name', '#default_value' => $record->name, ); return $form; } ?> Once that 'builder' function is defined, you can call drupal_get_form('mymodule_edit_record_form', $record) anywhere in your code, and the API will handle retrieving it. In fact, if your form page was simple and just consisted of building a form, then returning the results of drupal_get_form(), you can now use the following trick when you define the menus for your module: <?php function mymodule_menu($may_cache = TRUE) { $items[] = array( 'path' => 'mymodule/form-page', 'title' => t('edit a record'), 'callback' => 'drupal_get_form', 'callback arguments' => array('mymodule_form_builder') 'type' => MENU_LOCAL_TASK ); return $items; ?> In the above example, instead of putting a custom page-generation function in as your callback, and adding a single drupal_get_form($form_id) call as its body, you can just tell the menu system to call drupal_get_form() with your form ID. 3) What if I have several forms that use different IDs, but share the same layout, submit and validate functions, and so on? We're glad you asked. Modules can now implement hook_forms() to handle complex mapping of form IDs to builder functions. It's how node.module maps the id for each node type editing form to the central form-building function for the node edit screen. Because no functions named 'mymodule_first_form' or 'mymodule_second_form' exist, Forms API looks to hook_forms() to find the builder function. Each entry in the array returned by hook_forms() can also define callback arguments that will be passed to the builder function. In the mymodule_form_builder() function, the use of $form['#base'] is also important to note. It's a lot like the little-used but helpful $callback parameter that was used in the 4.7 version of drupal_get_form(). If $form['#base'] is set, its value will be used to look up the proper submit, validate, and theme functions for the form rather than the form's ID. In the future, hook_forms() will also allow us to capture other meta data about forms like access restrictions, workflow information, and so on. For now, though, the callback and optional callback arguments are all you need to worry about if you use it. 4) OK, that's great. How do I programmatically submit form data, then? Aha, the meat of it. Now, it's possible to completely circumvent drupal_get_form() and all of its submission, rendering, and redirection logic. You just pull up a form using its ID, and populate the new $form['#post']['edit'] element with the form values you'd like to submit. Then call drupal_process_form(). To recap: 1) drupal_get_form() now takes a $form_id, NOT a $form_id and a $form. 2) You need a builder function with the name of the $form_id that returns the fully constructed $form array 3) If your page content is JUST a form, you can use drupal_get_form as your menu callback, with $form_id as your menu callback argument. 4) If you need to use the same $form for multiple $form_ids, use hook_forms() 5) If you want the submit, validate, and theme functions to use naming different than the $form_id, set $form['#base'] 6) Use drupal_retrieve_form(), $form['#post']['edit'], and drupal_process_form() to programmatically submit forms. type(N) in MySQL numeric type defs in core schema useless

Hi all, I'm going through the core database code (as part of my role as PostgreSQL maintainer) and have stumbled upon an interesting tidbit. The use of (N) declarations for integer types in CREATE TABLE statements is useless. From the MySQL manual: "Another extension is supported by MySQL for optionally specifying the display width of an integer value in parentheses following the base keyword for the type (for example, INT(4)). This optional display width specification is used to left-pad the display of values having a width less than the width specified for the column. The display width does not constrain the range of values that can be stored in the column, nor the number of digits that are displayed for values having a width exceeding that specified for the column." Given that, why on earth are we even using them? I propose to strip the (N) declaration from core schema files. It'll provide a much quicker path between MySQL and PostgreSQL declarations. spellcheck module upgrade

Hi, i just needed spellcheck module for my project, but it is not compatible with 4.7. I just created a patch: http://drupal.org/node/79437 As I am not too much experienced Drupal developer yet, i would like to ask you to review the patch and provide fixes too. Please note that: 1) Spellcheck module doesn't have maintainer, i don't know, if i can become a maintainer, because: 2) Spellcheck needs shell_exec() permitted on your system, it uses ispell or aspell binary directly. As I have only ispell, which doesn't support UTF-8 - therefore it's unusable for me as my project is in Czech language (Which i discovered after porting to 4.7 :) As I won't be actively using it, i don't think, i can be a maintainer. 3) AJAX Spellcheck looks promising, but still in development. I think it requires more attention. Maybe Thox's AJAX module is obsoleted by JSTools? 4) My patch altered spellcheck.module so it displays form button "Spellcheck", but i am not able to place button everytime at the bottom of the node add form? Any suggestions? For what it's worth, the regions give me exactly what I need: customization of design without writing or altering code. The 4.7 site that I'm working on has 7 regions, though some of them are not obvious from the presentation. One of them is currently unused, 3 are left-rail, content, footer. I also added 'login', 'header' (unused), 'inline', and 'right header'. On this page: http://rubybaboon.com/taxonomy/term/20 it lets me: - put the login in the upper right - put Tagadelic's tag cloud next to my site logo - put the 'popularity' ranking (custom module) above the content (that's the inline block). So I think the issue may be: many people don't need multiple regions. Or it may be that people don't know how best to exploit them. The hidden region I have would allow me to post a sitewide message at the top of all pages instantly. In 4.6, I had to use flexiblock or use snippets. No more. - Ken Rickard agentrickard
