Absence - Baby

Hello all, as you know, Karlijn and I are expecting our first baby. Karlijn is due in 2 weeks, but chances are the baby might arrive a little sooner than that. It might as well arrive a little later, although at this point, we think it will arrive sooner that late. But who knows, you can't really plan these things. ;) I'll try to stick around as long as I can, but as soon the baby is born, I'm going to take a break from everything Drupal. I'd like to focus my energy on helping Karlijn, and I'd like to spend as much time with Karlijn and the baby as possible. I don't know what life will be shortly after our son or daughter is born, but time permitting, I might actually be around to help and to get some Drupal work done. Just don't count on that and expect me to disappear for a while. Either way, I expect to resume my normal duties two or three weeks after the baby is born. It would be great if you guys could take a lead in getting Drupal 6 out during my absence. You'll have to. There is a lot of work to be done, and once we ironed out most of the pressing bugs, we'll want to involve the (non-developer) Drupal community some more and target a first beta release. Try to post an occasional status update on drupal.org, and maybe target August 1st or August 15th as candidate dates for a first beta release of Drupal 6? Of course, Steven and Gabor should be here to help. It would be great to see you guys make a ton of progress when watching from the sideline for a while. :) The next couple of months, I'll also be on the look out for a Drupal 7 branch maintainer. I'll share my thoughts around that when we're a little bit closer to opening the new developer branch, but I figured I'd let you know that I'm keeping an eye on your contributions, the quality of your work, and your vision for Drupal. We'll have plenty of time to talk about this more, but showing off your talents during the code freeze helps as a maintaining a branch, and dealing with bug reports will be a significant part of any branch maintainer's job. question - hook execution order

Hi, If a module is generating both page content and block content, and thus defines both a page content callback function and a _block hook function, then which will get called first? Does the _block() hook get called first, or the page content callback as defined in _menu()? Thanks David

Drupal 5 incremental release?

Any one individual (or even a handful of individuals) is going to have a more limited amount of time to research, document, and fix the existing issues with Drupal 5.x-dev than if the entire Drupal 5 user base is looking at things. I guess I don't understand the reasons for not releasing something at this point. Considering that 5.1 was released within 2 weeks of the 5.0 release, at time frame which could almost be considered as "concurrent" with the 5.0release given the larger perspective of time, it's not much of a stretch to say that the 5.0 branch has never really been updated since being released (to quibble I guess the more technically correct term is that it's been "hardly" updated). - Caleb

The single quotes wont allow for the variable substitution needed to insert your filename. I'm not sure how I would do this. I have never used XML-RPC. Any example code I can look at? I've also of course googled the subject but I'm still confused as to how this would help me post new images to my Drupal site. To clarify, I'm looking for the simplest way to create a new image node when a certain PHP script is called by a scheduled cron. Thanks for any feedback on how to simplify. Drupal 5 incremental release?

Perhaps it's time to let Drupal 5.2 out of the bag soon? It's been 6+ months since an update to the branch and I imagine scores of updates to the codebase... After installing the current Drupal 5.x-dev tarball (as an experiment) I discover that there are database updates to the system and comments tables - this and/or other changes apparently breaks some contributed modules as I discover through a quick survey of the site (e.g., the spam module, though on, would not display and settings pages). It might be nice to for contrib authors to be able to update their modules now so that a) they still feel compelled to since Drupal 5 is still the current release, and b) so there's at least a short lag between needing to update code for Drupal 5.2 and needing to update it for Drupal 6. - Caleb HigherVisibilityWebsites.com

Has anyone implemented a SAML SP module (aka client) for Drupal? I seem to recall someone emailing me about it a year or so ago, but can't find anything. Core feed publishing

Chris- There are a number of people already working in the direction you propose, and we'd love to have you join in. Core aggregator is totally separate from the node system, so I don't understand where you are coming from. I'd encourage you to join http://groups.drupal.org/rss-aggregation if you are not already a member. We are trying to coordinate efforts in this corner of Drupal. We especially need reviewers for Aron Novak's Summer of Code work. http://groups.drupal.org/node/4624 and related. Aron's work is targeted as contrib for Drupal 5 & 6, with application for core in Drupal 7. Because of this supporting Atom or extending feed functionality with custom modules isn't as clean as it should be. For example, adding a name-space to a node feed requires replacing default feeds with custom feeds instead of simply "theming" the output of feeds as you would do with every other form of content display. Publishing only Atom feeds (and disabling RSS) is impossible. I would like to see feed publishing become more generic and more extensible in the core and I believe there has been discussion around this in the past. Ideally, feed publishing would be a generic module or api which would support the following needs. 1. Multiple arbitrary feed formats (RSS, Atom) with a default 2. Custom name-spaces and elements (possibly via themes or hooks) 3. Publish comment feeds or any other arbitrary content (watchdog events, users, etc.) 4. The ability to provide a feed of any arbitrary set of content (e.g., view, node-queue) 5. Optimize publishing for very high traffic feeds (e.g., caching or saving as static xml file) 6. The ability to disable feeds It is currently possibly to cobble together most of the above functionality with views.module, commentrss.module, and atom.module but the solution is sub-optimal for many reasons. I recently started creating a feed.module against HEAD with the hope that it could turn into a core module which would make feed publishing more flexible and collect all feed formatting and publishing code and eliminate the RSS publishing functionality in node.module. However, since 6.x was just frozen there's probably no hope of introducing this now but I'd still like to re-float the idea and get some feedback. In particular, I'm curious if anyone else is already working on such a project, if there are any side-effects of separating feed publishing from node.module that I haven't considered, or if this problem might be better approached using views as the complete solution (not really viable since views is not a core module). Please ignore the fact that this can't be implemented for 6.x. As an example of an issue I have faced, feedburner.com adds a "number of comments for this entry" if the feed includes the "wfw:commentsRss" element pointing to the comment feed for the entry. I have modified the commentrss.module to add the element to the node feed but there is no way to add the "wfw" name-space to the node feed without replacing it with a custom feed so I had to add the name-space to each instance of the "commentRss" element. req: role-specific content in pages

The idea is to have parts of a node marked-up to be visible only to certain roles. This could be achieved with certain SGML-like markups in the node body. For a silly example: <h3>Sale!
