Hello, I just read through the Schema API documentation: http://drupal.org/node/146843 All the examples of hook_install() assume the module is creating a whole new table. E.g. here http://drupal.org/node/146862 and here: http://api.drupal.org/api/function/hook_install function hook_install() { drupal_install_schema('upload'); } What if a contrib module wants to ALTER an existing table (created by another module)? Q1) Do I still use hook_schema() to define the extra field and call it from hook_install() as in the examples? Q2) Or, do I call db_add_field() from hook_install()? Q3) Is it considered best practice to create your own tables rather than adding fields to existing tables "belonging" to other modules? Blessings, Augustin.

Many to many relationships?

Does anybody know how to create the equivalent of a many-to-many relationship? Ie: On an input form, say I have a dropdown with 5 items in it. Using Computed Field

Hi, Has anyone used the Computed Field? http://drupal.org/project/ computed_field It's great for calculating sums of fields, but the problem is it doesn't come up in the Field List when creating a view. Any ideas? Kind Regards, Graeme McKibbin Software Developer

Data Architecture Design Sprint, Feb 4-6 2008 in Chicago

Several Drupal developers are meeting February 4-6, 2008 in Chicago to work on and re-design Drupal's core data architecture. Topics will include data APIs, object modeling, fields in core, and an overlapping swirl of related ideas. Our goal is to have a design proposal for presentation at DrupalCon Boston 2008. Over in our meetup planning group (http://groups.drupal.org/data-architecture-design-sprint) we welcome input on what we should try to cover and will blog there during the meetup to keep everyone informed on our progress. Note that we are only seven people meeting for three days; we need to stay very focused on a limited set of goals if we want to accomplish anything. Thanks, Barry

The state of import export

Hello, In trying to fix http://drupal.org/node/191197#comment-705056 (allow to import nodes in batch), I feel a bit sorry for the status of the various import export solutions in Drupal. - importexportapi is somewhat dead - node import only accepts to import everything at once, and does not provide duplicate checking - feed parser api and feed mapper seems to be a brighter future, but do not allow everything node import / importexportapi does So I'm wondering where to put my efforts. I'm trying to import 20.000 contacts as cck nodes, and allow user to reimport the same contacts and update the existing nodes, all with a nice import/export interface. I think the first step would be to have standardized import / export format for a Drupal node, maybe xml based (I think there is a xml format for books only), with support for cck, taxonomy, and all. This is a very complex problem, but I think it's important for Drupal, as an open platform, to provide excellent import/export tools. Which module has the greatest chance to provide a solid base? Is there a standard node xml (or some other format) representation? I'd like to spend time on a somewhat future proof solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated Philippe

Howdy Core Contributors (and aspiring ones), I spent some time yesterday compiling one measure of "how many contributors helped with Drupal6". There are many ways to measure this. I chose to look at the people that were mentioned in the cvs commit messages. Thankfully, Gabor and Dries are particularly consistent in the way that they make their commit messages (following the cvs commit message template[1] ) which makes this task fairly easy. The full data and technique to get the data are detailed in the Marketing Group of groups.drupal.org[2] but in summary 272 people were mentioned as having created or tested the patch with the following people as the top 10 (probably nobody is surprised by #1): User Patches Rank chx 141 1 pwolanin 87 2 Goba 67 3 dvessel 60 4 keith.smith 55 5 webernet 48 6 webchick 47 7 JirkaRybka 41 8 catch 38 9 bjaspan 36 10 Gabor seems to be reviewing/committing several patches per day recently, so there is still some time to move up in the numbers (or down).
