groking ajax callbacks
by Augustin (Beginner) 23 Jan '08

23 Jan '08

Hello, See my message to the documentation list about where to document everything ajax, ahax, js, and jquery. http://drupal.org/node/121997 Right now, I am trying hard to understand book.js and ... I just don't get it. In book.js, there is an ajax call: $.ajax({ url: Drupal.settings.book.formCallback +'/'+ $('#'+ Drupal.settings.book.formId +' input[name=form_build_id]').val() +'/'+ $('#edit-book-bid').val(), dataType: 'json', success: function(data) { // Insert the new select, and remove the progress bar. $('#edit-book-plid-wrapper').after(data['book']).remove(); } in book_menu(), there is a menu callback, which I guess is the callback used by the js above: $items['book/js/form'] = array( 'page callback' => 'book_form_update', 'access arguments' => array('access content'), 'type' => MENU_CALLBACK, 'file' => 'book.pages.inc', ); But everything javascript and ajax being completely undocumented, I am having a hard time to connect the two together, even by looking at drupal.js, looking at the big documentation block above drupal_add_js() (in common.inc), which I don't understand at all (I told you it was too early to change my handle!!) How does this... $.ajax({ url: Drupal.settings.book.formCallback +'/'+ $('#'+ Drupal.settings.book.formId +' input[name=form_build_id]').val()+'/'+ $('#edit-book-bid').val(), ...lead to the book/js/form callback??? I sense it is connected to Drupal.attachBehaviors (in drupal.js) and Drupal.behaviors.bookSelect (book.js), but I don't know how. As I always do, if you tell me both the answer and where to document this, I'll have a go at starting a documentation. Thanks and blessings, Augustin.

Hook_elements?
by Richard Morse 23 Jan '08

23 Jan '08

Hi! Is there any good documentation about how to implement your own elements through hook_elements()? I must confess that the example file provided on api.drupal.org doesn't seem entirely clear to me -- why do I want or not want '#input' to be true, when does '#process' get called (I tried to create my own element, but '#process' never got called), do I have to register the theme function via hook_theme (), what internal keys to the formapi should I be messing with, what are the standards for themeable elements -- is there any place I can go to find out these kinds of things? modifying the drupal final output..
by Iñaki Lopez 23 Jan '08

23 Jan '08

Hi all.. I'm trying to create a module to modify the final content of the request being sent to the client. which is the best way to do that? I've done some test with the hook_exit hook, but can access the content.. and hook_filter only is being executed for the node's content.. The idea for the module is to change the paths for the themeing files (images and css files) to a) local folder of system, b) another path in the web server.. As files (images and so) may not be referenced using drupal code but just with simple html output from any module I just would like to modify the final result after the rendering process.. Thank you all!!

Docs about Drupal + CVS: reminder and call for help
by Derek Wright 22 Jan '08

22 Jan '08

Hello world, I've had a bunch of conversations recently where I had to (re)explain aspects of Drupal's usage of CVS, how it fits in with projects and releases, etc. This message is for 2 things: 1) to remind the developer community about the existing resources, and 2) to solicit input for improvement. 1) What's there now: http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs The root of the d.o CVS handbooks. Tons (probably too much) of great info. http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs/quickstart An attempt at a very concise summary of the main things you need to know to get up to speed quickly. Lots of even senior Drupal developers apparently don't know this page exists, so everyone should check it out. http://drupal.org/node/197584 "Releases and Update Status" -- a page about how the release system interacts with update_status (thanks, GHOP!), including links to the talk I gave at BADCamp about this topic. No, it's not a Lullabot podcast, but it's almost as good. ;) 2) Call for help: I'll be the first to admit that what we have is confusing, and the docs aren't ideal. The problem is that I know all this stuff, so it's hard for me to document it well from the perspective of someone who doesn't. ;) So, now's your chance to help make it better: - What do you think the docs need to be more clear? - I just started http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs/faq -- what should be in it? See what's there already, and add comments to the page if you have other suggestions. - Other than documentation, what could be done to make all this more smooth and effortless? My deepest thanks go out to nancyw and add1sun, who've agreed to watch this thread and help wrangle suggestions into concrete progress. My hands are very full getting project* ported to D6 so we can upgrade d.o, and other related tasks. Thanks, -Derek (dww) p.s. Warning: if someone replies to this thread with "svn", "git", or "bzr", you'll be very sorry. ;) This isn't confusing because of CVS itself, it's because revision control in general is confusing if you're not used to it. Drupal's choice of revision control system is not up for discussion now (believe me, you'll know when it is). Thanks in advance for not wasting everyone's time.

HTML in node titles for D5
by Yuval Hager 22 Jan '08

22 Jan '08

Hi all, I need to enable simple HTML styling on node titles. I believe this would be rather common on news sites and similar. Is there any correct (or as little disruptive as possible) method to implement that? How much of core hackery will be required? I will not be able to switch to D6, until a significant amount of contrib I am using will be available for D6.. Thanks, -- Yuval Hager [T] +972-77-341-4155 [@] yuval(a)avramzon.net

A new way to administer Drupal
by Karoly Negyesi 22 Jan '08

22 Jan '08

Hi, there is now a dropzone.module in my sandbox http://cvs.drupal.org/viewvc.py/drupal/contributions/sandbox/chx It provides a block where you can add "stuff" and then there can be certain things you can do with it (the "stuff" is persisted in session). I have implemented menu reparenting as an example. The idea behind this is that you already have various navigation tools in your site and such an admin block lets you use all those to find the item you want to admin and, in this case, the parent as well. Another fine example could be comment mover. Taxonomy terms parenting. And so on. As the name suggests drag-and-drop would be a welcome addition to this module. I am really curious what people think about it. Note: it's very alpha. Using it on a production site will destroy said site. Regards, NK

Re: [development] So why we do support postgresql?
by Peter Wolanin 22 Jan '08

22 Jan '08

As we all know, patches speak louder than words in terms of affecting change in the Drupal. To take a step in this direction, here's an issue: http://drupal.org/node/212918 The attached patch makes MySQL use its ANSI mode. I marked it as a feature request for 6.x, I'll let someone else decide if this should really be a 6.x bug, or a 7.x feature. This should move core (but especially contrib module) developers in the right direction at least by breaking obviously non-ANSI-compliant SQL. I don't see any obvious problems with core when applying this patch with PHP 4.4, MySQL 5.0, but my testing is minimal so far. -Peter > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > From: Jean-Michel Pouré <jm(a)poure.com> > To: development(a)drupal.org > Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2008 13:42:09 +0100 > Subject: Re: [development] So why we do support postgresql? > Dear friends, > > > That is all well and good from "it runs" ( i.e. unit testing, > > functionality is OK), > > but when you try to optimize for large datasets or complex queries, > > you often > > have to do things that are database engine specific. > > > > This is a classic clash been theory and reality. > > Sorry, not my opinion. > MySQL employs non-standard SQL queries. > > If the code was written primarily for PostgreSQL using tables, > standard sql queries and views, it would run smoothly on MySQL and most > databases like Oracle and DB2. > > This is because PostgreSQL is the standard SQL99 implementation. > Very few things differ in PostgreSQL. > > The converse is not true. > > > The bottleneck is how many developers know PostgreSQL AND care > > about Drupal using PostgreSQL, and willing to put in the effort to > > keep > > in tandem with MySQL so PostgreSQL does not lag behind. > > I recommand using pgAdmin III graphical client, which is the standard > graphical interface for PostgreSQL. > > Also, log and analyse all SQL queries and plans. > > Like in my HOWTO : PostgreSQL query optimisation => > http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=29292 > > It is pretty hard against MySQL.
