RFC: proposal for project releases

many of us have been wishing there was a better way for project maintainers to identify and distribute releases of their contributions on drupal.org. the current system of nightly tarballs generated automatically, with everything being called simply "<project_name>-4.7.0" (and relying on a date to have any idea what "version" it is) leaves a lot to be desired... instead of just complaining about it, killes, nedjo, merlinofchaos, and myself have been figuring out how it should really work. in particular, merlin and i had a good debate on IRC today (which some other folks added to), and we're converging on a design we think handles all the concerns, and yet would be relatively easy to achieve. it's getting to the point that we just need the proverbial +1 from some key folks (namely killes and/or dries) so we don't start writing code for something that won't be put into action. request for comments (RFC): http://drupal.org/node/58066 if you ever wanted to see this stuff get better, now's your chance to share your ideas/concerns. please just post into that issue, no need for a big thread on this mailing list. thanks! -derek (dww)

Forms API and #required file fields

The Forms API does not currently support file fields with #required => TRUE (and is documented as such in the Forms API Reference). I suggest that with a little effort it can and that to make the API more consistent and useful it should. I discovered this limitation because 4.7 flexinode allows file, image, and perhaps other file-based fields to be specified as required and attempts to impose the required-ness by setting #required => TRUE in the form element. The result is a flexinode type that cannot be created or edited because all #required file fields are always reported as not filled in, even if they are. Clearly, this is a bug in flexinode, not in the Forms API which is just behaving as specified. However, the fact that flexinode tried to work this way argues that the Forms API SHOULD support it, because it is a logical and consistent way to interpret Forms API semantics. The reason it doesn't work is that form_builder() in form.inc only looks in $_POST for values to store in $form['#value']. Since file upload data is in $_FILES, $form['#value'] is never set for file fields. When it is #required, _form_validate() reports an error. form_builder() already has a switch based on $form['#type']. We could add something like: case 'file': $form['#value'] = $_FILES['edit']['name'][$form['#key']]; break; The new $form['#value'] would then have a filename if one were uploaded or nothing if one were not. This would be sufficient to support the #required field. Since currently $form['#value'] never contains anything for file fields, storing a filename there can't hurt anybody. This requires that $form['#key'] be set so a form element knows its own name in the $_POST and $_FILES arrays. But that is easy enough to do during the recursion in form_builder(): // Recurse through all child elements. $count = 0; foreach (element_children($form) as $key) { // tell each element its own key name $form[$key]['#key'] = $key; .... } Comments? Student developer looking for some drupal mentoring

Is there a developer's IRC channel I could ask a few questions on? I have started work on two module of my own, and i need a little guidance on how to start a project on the drupal site and some help answering a few miscellaneous questions. I am a student, who managed to get an internship developing drupal modules for the summer. I've talked it over with my boss and we are going to contribute all the work I do back to the community. I was going to apply for google SOC, but I knew I would have my hands full with this internship. Never the less, I could still use some guidiance from a sessioned php/drupal developer. Here is the website I am currently working on. http://www.openmfg.org. Most notably I managed to do a little black magic and achieve partial integration with mantis bug tacking system. I have also made a few modifations to the listserve module to work with postgreSQL. I managed to set up another example of ezmlm, qmail, mailhandler, listhandler forum to listserve set up. I read someone where that there was a desire for a howto to be written on this. It that still the case? Please take a look around and if anyone is willing to act as a mentor or wants to lend a hand you can contact me off list. Thanks Trevor Mckeown

developing book review -- two blocks or two modules?

hi im working on a book review module to allow multiple reviews (the existing one only supports a single review per module) I plan to so there will be two objects - a book - and a review Is it better to have both as two blocks in the same module ? or have two separate modules? Any good places to check on this ? tnx in advance. srimal.

I currently have two sites sending out mailing lists with poormanscron, and they are relatively small user bases (59 and 230 users respectively, currently 61 and 1022 nodes respectively) and the recipients get the mailinst lists just fine, albeit sometimes a few minutes later than anticipated, but does that really matter? hook_depend()

Hi. What about implementing hook_depend(). I mean module that depends on some module (e.g. taxonomy) must define function modulename_depend() { return array('taxonomy'); } Then if user has no taxonomy module turned on - he/she will be asked to do so or not. If not - he/she will be told that modulename can't be installed. Also when user disables taxonomy module then he/she will be told that modulename depends on taxonomy module and so modulename will be also turned off.
