[drupal-devel] param in middle of url?

Hey all.. I want to do something like this: ?q=foo/1/bar where "1" in this case is a user id (or rather, I want it to be a param into my callback). Is there a facility that already exists for doing this? Thanks, -=Aaron

Consider that the majority of people that talk about folksonomy on the web may know what "free tagging" means, too. Also, given that someone may not know what either term means, "free tagging" is more likely to suggest what the use of the module is or at least will more quickly make sense. I also suspect that "free tagging" will catch on as a term because it's not as jargon or technical sounding as "folksonomy." "Free tagging" describes the action of doing something. While looking at http://drupal.org/admin/logs I noticed quite a few PHP errors that happen regularly. I am listing some samples here, so as to try to give them visibility, and those can help eradicating them can do so. Each one of those happens several times, so it is not a one off 1. implode(): Bad arguments. in /var/www/drupal.org/htdocs/modules/user.module on line 635. This is caused by the theme_user_profile function. Visit here to reproduce it http://drupal.org/user/20575 2. opendir(files/images//temp): failed to open dir: Permission denied in /var/www/drupal.org/htdocs/includes/file.inc on line 523. This is from an Oregon State U IP address and at regular minutes after the hour. So it is a normal cron run. http://drupal.org/cron.php?key=drop But what is the key=drop? It seems that the double slash is confusing it? 3. fsockopen(): unable to connect to byyyyttgggg.org:80 in /var/www/drupal.org/htdocs/includes/common.inc on line 335. 4. fsockopen(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known in /var/www/drupal.org/htdocs/includes/common.inc on line 335. Seems the above ones are from users trying to gain access to Drupal.org via remote authentication. They setup a drupal site at example.com and then they try to login as someone(a)example.com that they have just setup! 5. Lost connection to MySQL server during query query: LOCK TABLES cache WRITE Lost connection to MySQL server during query query: UPDATE sessions Lost connection to MySQL server during query query: UPDATE node_counter SET daycount This happens A LOT for the cache table. It also happens for the session tables, and about once for the node_counter, as well as system tables. This all points to contention in the database, specially for the cache table on a busy site like Drupal.org. Comments? Ideas?

Gerhard, Your point is taken, however, who is going to do the education? You? Me? Other members of the team? Sure, we can make a best effort, but will we reach them all, due to the dynamic nature of Drupal's user base? Okay, let me get this straight. What reasons may there be to create an excellent piece of software like Drupal? 1. Personal fame (and maybe a resume) of the developers. 2. Financial gain. 3. A sense of personal victory. 4. The desire to create something special for the world. 5. Investing of time something that you use and have considerable control over its development, as opposed to an out-of-the-box commercial system which is often a pain in the backside. Okay - that's just a few of the most important reasons why you would develop Drupal. Now... Let's go through these items: 1. Sure - everyone knows who Gerhard is. 2. Maybe - I don't know if you charge your clients, or even if you have any. Probably. 3. Yes - but this depends on your nature. Are you a person who challenge the status quo? Yes. Okay. 4. Hmmm... - it will not be special to the world if you would make it difficult for them to use it. 5. Yes - this would probably be one of your main reasons if Drupal was yours. Where am I going with this? Simple: You may not want to focus on item #4, or feel inclined that if the world will not fit in, they must move out, but, in reality, if everyone felt the way you do, where would Drupal be today? The people are supposed to educate themselves by means of the docs we got to provide. If they are too lazy to read it is their problem if they stay dumb and cannot use excellent software. Hi there, Steven Wittens has presented us with a very nice search patch which unfortunately didn't get much attention. One problem was that his patch programm produxed a faulty patch. At least that is what I claim. ;) I've re-rolled the patch: http://drupal.org/node/28159 I've also made my tarred up Drupal directory available. Note: It only includes the includes/ database/ modules/ misc/ directories of today's cvs. Download here: http://tfp1.physik.uni-freiburg.de/~killes/drupal-search.tar.gz for a limited period of time. Hi, I have been following this discussion on-and-off, but wasn't the "admin theme" in a previous version of Drupal? I think it was 4.2 or 4.1. I still have a site running on that version that uses the admin theme. At that time there was a huge discussion about NOT having it anymore, so I assume this is making a complete circle now. I believe the main issues about that version's admin theme was because it was: 1. Branded (Druplicon) 2. Not user customizable 3. ... (Can't remember other issues with regards to that) What exactly is the difference here? Why was it removed then and not improved instead? Besides the fact that this one will probably be much better than that version, and (maybe indirectly) handle the concerns that was around the previous times? I don't condemn the decisions made then, but I was wondering if someone (like me) who can remember those old times can chime in and drive this issue forward? It could be great for ASPs and contractors, and those people don't necessarily need a UI for such a thing. Lets do the admin theme on any child page of /admin. Want create content to be an administration function? Use the menu module to move it to be a child of /admin. While we are on the subject.. anyone have any constructive criticism for the menu module or maybe some mockups? -Neil

after reading this article: http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=2904 i'm now using this rule in .htaccess (in rewrite block above the "?q" rewrite rule [which would override this rule]): # Try to prevent comment spam. Attempts to post comments are 403 if they # aren't coming from within site. This will prevent clients that don't send # referrer from posting comments, but I'm not aware of any modern browser that # does not send a referrer RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} "!^http://(www.)?slaughters.com/.*$" [NC] RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} "POST /comment/reply/.*" RewriteRule .* - [F] i believe the domain name can be replaced with a var to make it generic. i'm just not sure if there are cases where a valid client does not send a referrer. i switched from MT to Drupal largely because my site had become a spam repository. i know there are lots of modules that try to prevent spam, but i prefer simplicity where possible. of course, it's probably only a matter of time until spammers spoof headers to circumvent this, but i'm sure it can be tweaked to keep up with the bastards. anyway, this is the anti-spam approach i'm going to use for now. thought there might be more general interest in it.

The point being - not everyone has his site set up by a third party. Some non-techy users set up their sites themselves (and boggs the support list). If I can help these folks, I do, because I was at their level once myself. Unless we plan to have a lot more support questions in the mailing lists as Drupal grows, we better make things as simple as possible. I truly understand your point about having to know stuff, but what do you need to know? Taxonomies or Categories? Folksonomies or Free Tagging? We're going off the topic here. I could even compare a node to a story. Sure, I know node != story, but the thing is, what exactly is a node? A piece of content? Story is also a piece of content. If I say "My car's engine is not working" it could be any part of it - the technical person will figure out exactly which part of it). To go back to the top part of my post, we who help on the support list and forums are the only techies some admins will see, and if we can make it as easy as possible for them (without insulting their intelligence - which is a whole new concept by itself) we will make less work for ourselves. IMHO you cannot be a successfull car engineer if you dont know about the ideas behind an engine. But you cna be a successfull driver without that knowledge. You can only be a successfull admin if you know about nodes, menus, taxonomies etc. But you can be a user without all that knowledge. This, however, does not mean that we cannot make things better and easier. But it means that we should not estimate our admins as complete morons. A moron cannot be an admin. Even if we make our admin area moron proof. So to turn this around: we can use correct yargon, for admins, for we can expect them to learn about that yargon. Esp if that means that in the end the admin knows better what it is about. (meaning: the yargon was used correct) Bèr

Hi there, I understood someone is rewriting the project module, is that correct? In any case, I tried to make a patch to tackle all the bugs in the shortcut links to patches/issues in the queue. None of them take care of the three 'patch' statii."My issues", "pending patches" an numerous more only select patch (code needs work) and ignore the other patch statii. I could not find where this is generated. So is there anyone working on the module who watns to tackle this issue. It really annoys me, to have all these 'non working' links. Bèr
