drupal install/dependencies

I added a small include file as an example phase/stage runner for the drupal install effort. It uses the dependency.inc from drpkg what I presented in Amsterdam. http://dev.bryght.com/t/file/drpkg/drpkg.inc http://dev.bryght.com/t/file/drpkg/include/dependency.inc I keep those in the bryght svn repository, thanks Adrian, since it is too early to even try it for core, especially since 4.7 is around the corner, although this thing isn't going to interfere at all with any normal drupal services. The main idea is to execute the different phase callbacks, like install, configure, ... in dependency order. The latter is ensured by dependency.inc I presume that there exists a PACKAGES file, akin to debian's one, describing the collection of packages and their dependencies, and that each package has a set of files package_name.phase, for example image.install, implementing the callback, validation and error callbacks required. Drupal 4.5.7/4.6.5 release schedule

Hello world, as mentioned last week, I'd like to go ahead and release Drupal 4.5.7 and 4.6.5 to fix the various URL problems introduced by the new XSS filter code. Before I do so, I'd like to know if anyone has been using the head of the DRUPAL-4-6 branch in a production environment? If so, are there any known problems or is it safe to release? If not, would you be willing to upgrade your Drupal 4.6 sites to the head of DRUPAL-4-6 to help test? I don't have a Drupal 4.6 site myself, so I'm looking for help testing. Hey, maybe it's a silly question but is there a procedure for creating a new contrib module? Previously I'd worked with PEAR and they freak out if you add something without asking first. andrew

Scratching an itch: Machine Learning

Hello, I have an interest in machine learning that I would like to bring to bear on Drupal, and I am hoping to enlist the help of some other people who share this interest - or can help me by providing data. Briefly, machine learning is the algorithmic application of statistical principles. A classic example is the Bayesian spam in your email program/gateway/etc. Based on a learned model, this filter classifies incoming mail as either SPAM or NOT SPAM based on a vector of data drawn from the message. I am looking for interested parties to join me in developing a series of machine learning modules for Drupal. These modules will use data that Drupal can collect to predict outcomes. Examples might include smart "What's Related" type modules, better troll and spam bot protection, better searching, auto categorization, and a wide variety of other predictive tasks. I envision the following phases to this project: 0. Pre-model research: See what data Drupal captures, what other similar modules exist for this purpose, and what work needs to be done to capture the appropriate data. Also: create a wish list of machine learning related tasks to choose from later. 1. Data gathering: Gather information from various sources to use as the basis for generation and testing of models. 2. Model/Tool evaluation: Gather available tools to see if they can be leveraged to generate useful models. Evaluate different modeling algorithms for appropriateness to tasks. 3. Focus research: Pick one task from the wish list on which to concentrate. 4. Initial modeling and testing: Begin creating models to evaluate for suitability to task. 5. Refine data collection: Address shortcomings in the data acquisition to create better models. 6. Test model in live setting: Empirical testing on the model. 7. Module creation: Turn test code into publicly releasable module. 8. Review, evaluate, publish: Gather findings into a document for use by the Drupal and machine learning communities. At this time, I would place myself in the Phase 0 category. I hope to find admins or consultants of admins who run sites that are willing to provide data for this project. User privacy is important, and I am very mindful of your needs in this department. Please do not think this is an attempt at stealing users or personal data. I would also hope the admins would be willing to install custom data gathering modules and help conduct later empirical tests. This has been a long email already, and I don't want to tie up the list with messages relating to my specific pet project. optimize table in cron

Has it ever been discussed to run a query to optimize some of the more active tables in MySQL during cron.php runs? For example 'OPTIMIZE TABLE watchdog;'

The problem with email is that it is connectionless information. It goes out best effert delivery, no garuntee at all. There is no point to point in common usage unless it;s completely internal and even then there are caveats. If you mean the 'read recipt' option common to set in many modern email clients, that is less then useful as many basic mail gateway systems strip that part out of all incoming messages as part of ongoing anti-spam efforts (I know we do where I work and many others as well). So email in and of itself is not a good way to check unless you control every aspect of the mail system. Even if you do, you still can't 'prove' a person read an email soooo..... unless you have the account and a spot flipped in the database where a person logged in and acknolowedges reading something, email alone won;t carry weight in court. -sp I have to deal with this question all the time at work. node access issue

Hi, I have just been given a hairy request from a client and need to guidance to what would be the best method of doing this. The site is a heavily customised drupal 4.6 which is running the organic groups. Organic groups is using the node access table already, which causes a conflict with the node_priv_by_role module. But what they want I think maybe able to be done via something else, but I am not sure what. Basically they want is for anonymous users to only access a few bits of content, and nothing else, where as authenticated users will see everything there, which hasn't been restricted by organic groups. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Gordon.

I started making a Drupal theme out of it. I didn't complete a full featured theme after I decided I didn't like where it was going.
