Drupal 6.0 is released!

Hello World, Thanks to your hard work on the features going to Drupal 6 over the last year and all the work put to fixing bugs in the final stages as well, Drupal 6.0 is now released. The announcement is at http://drupal.org/drupal-6.0 and includes announcement for some of the cool new stuff from contributions as well, made possible with this release. This marks a new point in updating your modules to Drupal 6, if you have not done so. Coder module (also linked from the announcement) is an awesome tool to help with this. Also note that Drupal 4.7 is not officially supported as of today, so no new Drupal 4.7 releases are expected. Whether you support 4.7 versions of your modules is up to you. But the most immediate task for all is to go out and do some partying. Spread the great news on the new release. Happy hacking with Drupal 7, Gabor

Design work on fields in core and more

Six Drupal developers met for three days in Feburary 2008 to work on and re-design Drupal's core data architecture. We began with an overly broad list of topics and goals and spoke in very general terms about "Drupal's overall mission" and similarly vague concepts. By the end of the design sprint, we devised a tangible vision for Drupal's future and an understandable method for getting there. In more concrete terms, we talked about moving CCK fields in core and how local data fields (e.g. votes, comments, whatever) can be attached to remote data objects. Our notes and discussions are available at http://groups.drupal.org/data-architecture-design-sprint. Please read at least everything starting from our Day 1 notes before telling us how stupid we are. :-) Thanks, Barry

D6 SAPI: using hook_install to ALTER {tables}

Hello, I just read through the Schema API documentation: http://drupal.org/node/146843 All the examples of hook_install() assume the module is creating a whole new table. E.g. here http://drupal.org/node/146862 and here: http://api.drupal.org/api/function/hook_install function hook_install() { drupal_install_schema('upload'); } What if a contrib module wants to ALTER an existing table (created by another module)? Q1) Do I still use hook_schema() to define the extra field and call it from hook_install() as in the examples? Q2) Or, do I call db_add_field() from hook_install()? Q3) Is it considered best practice to create your own tables rather than adding fields to existing tables "belonging" to other modules? Blessings, Augustin.

Update notifications not working in forums on d.o.?

Hi, Could someone who knows kindly answer this http://drupal.org/node/216337 -- I have waited 12 days for a definite answer. Basically, why d.o. does not send mail alerts with watched / contributed forum threads (as it does with updated issues). I think that this significantly impacts usability of the site -- don't you? New Drupal Logging to text file Module

And again... The company I work for bases all of our projects on the Drupal infratructure. The watchdog application simply doesn't work for us, so I'd created a module to log messages to file in the format: 00:00:58 [module::function_name][LOG_LEVEL]: Checking to see if user 0c2f977cc24e4e41d8cd6d9a4099ab0b is anonymous. We've decided that this is likely a worthwhile project to release to the community, so I am currently working on a release. Right now, I have a group of Log Levels (FATAL, ERROR, WARN, INFO, DEBUG, TRACE), one log type (DRUPAL_BASE) and the ability to add/configure more. The site admin can configure whether or not to turn on logging, a minimum log level to write out, where the log files should live, etc. I will send another message once the initial release is made, but wanted to gauge what people thought about this module. It's more of a developer's module, as it requires developers to add a hook, such as: drupal_log_to_file("MODULE_NAME::FUNCTION_NAME", "LOG_TYPE", LOG_LEVEL, "MESSAGE") into their code, in order for the system to log anything. With a jQuery snippet from cYu, I committed a quick hack to my sandbox to allow the headings on the access control page to follow down the page with the mouse in Drupal 4.7.x and 5.x. Hi, Thanks for these new modules. They definitely seem useful. Based on the past year of data we get 4.1 new modules per day on Drupal.org If people want to know about all of them they can subscribe to http://drupal.org/taxonomy/term/14/0 If they want to know about the "important" ones they can subscribe to http://drupaldashboard.com/feed-item/43 I don't think announcing them on the Development list is a good idea in general. This sounds a lot like the syslog and/or trace and/or log4drupal functionality http://drupal.org/node/149341 http://drupal.org/project/trace http://www.johnandcailin.com/blog/cailin/log4drupal-logging-api-drupal As a module developer, I don't want to have to choose which one of these I support or (worse) include calls to all three. I'd rather see this project merged with those projects so we can have the "one true logging module" instead of "3 logging modules that do similar things and which in the end make life harder for developers and site admins". New Asterisk Call Detail Record (CDR) module

I've had a quick email chat with hunmonk about this a few weeks ago... Not sure if anyone's using Asterisk, and moreso Asterisk CDRs -> mySQL, but I'd been using Asterisk-Stat V2.0 for some time, and it's terribly outdated, so I'd decided to create a Drupal module to handle Asterisk CDRs. asteriskcdrs. The project can be found here: http://drupal.org/project/asteriskcdrs I've released a preliminary package, but if others are using the system, I would love to get some feedback on where to grow this module. For now, it mainly allows you to search call detail records and view details on each. I plan to add in reporting, and maybe graphing. It's a little bit finnicky in the setup now, so please let me know if folks run into setup issues, and I can walk you through anything that needs to be done (read: I had to hack in the ability to add an an auto-incrementing field to the CDR table, as Asterisk doesn't put one in there).
