Proposed Ubuntu delay for 6 weeks

As we are pushing for 4.7 going out the door, Mark Shuttleworth is proposing a delay for the upcoming Ubuntu Dapper. As you know, Ubuntu is committed to a 6 month release cycle, and the release numbers are of yy.mm format (e.g. 05.10 for Breezy Badger). Proposal to make drupal support RTL languages out of the box

Hi, No doubt drupal is a great piece of work and the people behind it have done a great job and we are all thankful to them. However, being the first time to deal with it, I faced many problems regarding Arabic support. I, and another friend, Mugtaba, decided to lend a hand as a reward. We began with the translation of 4.7beta branch and almost finished it. Then we turned to the problem of RTL/BiDi and found the work of Ayman who has thankfully made his own bidi-theme. We thought about it carefully and found that Drupal has the flexibility to support RTL for all the themes out of the box with a trivial modifications to drupal files. So, instead of having themes for RTL which is different than the themes for LTR, we would patch all the themes to support both RTL and LTR. The problem: In RTL languages the direction should be set to be from right to left and hence everything on the page should be mirrored horizontally. Graphical arrows that point to the right, should now point to the left. Things that float right, should now float left. padding-left values, should go to padding-right values and vice versa. Other rules which are not direction oriented would remain the same. The solution is to have a drupal_RTL.css file. I will shortly show an example of that file. This file should be loaded from common.inc in addition to drupal.css in case of RTL languages to override a few rules of the defaults. When we make this clear in the documentation, the developers of the themes could make their design in a more or less symmetric way that doesn't even require a separate RTL.css file but when the need arises, the theme author or any one interested could very easily make that file available and official part of the theme. (non-critical) getting a new polls.module feature in before 4.7.0?

i know we're in a crunch for 4.7.0. i've been trying to help find, test, and fix what bugs i can, and i want to be in solidarity with the request by dries. that said, once the 4.7.0 rc goes out, there won't be any more new features added to any of 4.7.x, right? if so, any chance of sneaking in a small new feature for polls i wrote a patch for a few weeks ago? http://drupal.org/node/51561 patch needs review. any comments on that node most welcome. thanks, -derek (dww)

Attachment Indexing module.

Hello all, I am currently writing an attachment indexing module. I've tried the swish-e module (and even converted it to 4.7) but it doesn't do what I would like it to do. I want all my search results to be integrated, not in separate tabs. So far I've created all the back end administration interface and I am now moving on to the actual work part but I am having problems with the file revisioning system. I need some clarification of the file and file_revisions table so I can write some more specific SQL. I would only like to index attachments if they are listed on the node but I have no idea how the 'list' column of file_revisions controls this behaviour. It seems that if it is a '0' then it isn't listed, but if it is anything else, it is. Is this correct? I realise that I also need to look at how flexinode handles its file uploads so that these can be indexed too. Is there any documentation on the structure of the DB? as I cannot find any and it would help. Thanks Adam P.S. If this is the wrong list then apologies. I could not find a module development list.

Hi, I have a problem with a bug. It needs a general solution. The problem lies in error_handler() function. Sometimes it needs to do "additional" stuff before doing insert into watchdog. Generally it looks like this: ... some queries here ... 1. now a query that goes bad. This issues error_handler() 2. error handler does INSERT INTO {watchdog} ... control goes back to the place when the error happened Sometimes between 1. and 2. extra actions need to be performed. That is, you can not do the INSERT right away. For example, in http://drupal.org/node/39460 you need to do ROLLBACK. In http://drupal.org/node/53420 you need to do pg_end_copy(). In theory you might have to do both pg_end_copy() and ROLLBACK. But there is at least one extra problem. User can call error handler by himself with trigger_error(). The error handler can spawned by PHP error. In those two cases, we should not do the ROLLBACK. How to differentiate between those two cases and "legitimate" case when we should do some action? Karoly et al, Karoly, thanks for writing down your criteria for critical bugs. Dries wrote that we are up to 18 critical bugs again from 13. I've said what I think could be done about this. I think some users, perhaps 85%, will change their postings if guidelines are posted and they find what they considered critical isn't. Ann

Huge features limited to early in the release cycle

Here is an observation and suggestion. As we all know, the FormsAPI was a REALLY BIG change for 4.7. If I recall correctly, it was relatively late in the release cycle (last fall I think) when it was included. The fact that all forms for core and many contrib modules have to be rewritten is a huge effort. Refactoring parts of it (e.g. _execute to _submit, and many other changes) made the learning curve very steep for module developers. So, in the future, for new features that have a far reach, and scope/magnitude, such as the new theme system proposed by Adrian, and is being discussed in the themes mailing lists, I propose that they be considered only if they are relatively early in the release cycle, so we have time to squash the bugs, get over the learning curve, ..etc. Now, back to getting 4.7 out of the door ...
