Some of you might be interested in this discussion about moving translations out of source code files in Drupal 8(!). The translation process as implemented now might or might not actually change with this. http://groups.drupal.org/node/154394 All feedback welcome! There is also some discussion for Drupal 7 processes involved (a proposal to write update functions for small string changes so translations are not invalidated). Pretty interesting overall, so worth some time to think about it I think.
